Their work is also compared with their counterparts in the French and German armies, highlighting differences in practice and approach. In so doing, this study throws new light upon the characteristics, careers and working lives of these officers, investigating the ways in which they both embraced and resisted change. This offers evidence both for those who wish to exonerate the British command system on the basis of the learning process but also for those critical of its performance, thus advancing understanding of British military history in the First World War.

About the Author
Dr Paul Harris works as a lecturer and writer. He completed a PhD on the staff of the British army at the Department of War Studies, King's College London in 2013. Prior to that he gained an MA in First World War studies at the University of Birmingham. His research interests include the work of the staff, military planning and strategy, and the career of Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Lawrence, He is a member of the British Commission for Military History and serves on the committee of the Douglas Haig Fellowship.
