My new go-to for self-study of languages.

Hands down this is an excellent series. I wish I would've used this for Spanish. The information really sticks with you if you are patient and don't try to rush through the process. ( ie.. If I don't understand something, I simply don't move on to the next lesson ) In the beginning of language learning, quality study time over quantity in my opinion. I think an hour each day is far better and more consistent than 4 hours 3 times a week. And realistically, since I don't have the time or the mental stamina to do 3+ hours every day, this series works for me perfectly.
The Good:
It teaches you through short conversations. Yes, they can get repetitive but the key here is that you are building sentence structure and vocabulary. So when you come across new words, you can substitute those words into phrases you already know and you begin to naturally express your own thoughts in that language without thinking about it too much. If you ask me, that's well worth the repetitive nature of listening to the audio over and over again.
The Bad:
The only thing I didn't like is that the instructions on how to use the system are kind of vague but a simple Google search ( "Assimil Instructions" or "How to use Assimil") revealed a number of different approaches to maximize learning. I sort of pulled from here and there and came up with an approach that I like and works for me. I'm still giving this system 5 stars despite my problem with the lack of clarity in the instructions because, the ability that I'm gaining to naturally speak German by far outweighs my beef with the instructions on how to use the content. The content and method is key here and that's what deserves the rating in my opinion.
Overall:
Whatever your approach is, don't rush through the lessons. They suggest 1 per day. Honestly, there are some lessons that I've done one per day and others I've spent 2 or 3 days on because I simply wasn't comfortable with my level of understanding and comprehension of the lesson. You won't do yourself any favors if you move on without understanding each lesson.
I'm definitely using Assimil to start other languages in the future. In fact, we are getting the Spanish version for my wife.

Amazing Book

The book is divided up in 100 lessons. I'm only on lesson 17 of the book. But, I have learned a lot of vocabulary from each lesson. You read one lesson a day until you get to lesson 50. Then you go back to the beginning and translating the English part in to German. What I do is just read the passages and also listening to the audio (better with headsets). Then stop it after the sentence is finished. Then, you pronounce it to your self and then with the book close. Go over the lesson 4 times a day so you'd keep it in your head.
It is a very excellent product for one tenth of the price of that crapp Rosetta Stone. Which is just a cheap flash card application for $1000. Any ways, also download Anki (flash card app for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. You can stick words in it and also stick sentences and use that also for memorising with the book.
I wish I had gotten it first before I did German. But, it still helpful even though I am still a beginner. It will get you close to Intermediate German. The only bad thing is there is no advanced book of Assimil with German unless you know French.
I'm going to buy this book again when I learn another language. I recommend it for any one who is serious about learning it.

Assimil is a good start for a lot of people

Assimil is a French company that develops language learning courses that aim to get you comfortable in the language by using more intuitive methods. I've only used the German and Spanish with ease, but my experience so far is that they use quality native speakers for the audio, which typically, starts out slowly and speeds up as you progress through the course.
For those of you new to language learning, there are many different methods and techniques you can use to help you, but you will have to experiment and find out what you like most and what works best for you. The hardest part for many people will be sticking with a method long enough to get results, because it takes time. Don't be silly and think you're going to be speaking fluent German or some other language within a few months, because it's highly unlikely, but, it is possible to develop basic conversation skills in a few months with intense studies and practice, though most people arn't that hardcore about it.
In any case, I'll list some methods/techniques that may help those people that are serious about learning another language or learning anything. Some of these will probably be common sense, but that doesn't mean you're actually applying them.
Traditional methods;
Grammar study, Word-list, Teacher corrections
Less or non-traditional methods;
Mnemonics, SRS (spaced-repetition-system), mind maps, learning grammar patterns more intuitively through noticing, LR method, TPR (total-physical-response), Dr. Arguelles' shadowing and scriptorium techniques, self-created artificial total immersion e.g. Khatzumoto of ajatt.com
I think you have to experiment with all these things and find out what works best for you, and what works best at beginner stage might not work best at the intermediate or advanced stages, so you have to keep things interesting.
One of the most important things is to find materials that you like, this will insure that you stick with materials for longer and learn more from them, so try your best to find things that are interesting to you. As soon as you feel up-to-it then start reading native materials that you find interesting. Do the same for audio media as well, audio books, t.v. shows, films, radio even.
Learning some basics about phonetics or even the Ipa can help you improve your pronunciation greatly. I also recommend recording yourself, listening to it, improve then re-record again, trying to improve your pronunciation actively.
