Kindergarten-Grade 3. A well-told Chinese folktale, first published in 1979 (Crowell), has been reissued with a handsome new jacket and a few changes in the text. The moon goddess, White Wave, appears in the form of a moon snail to keep house for a poor farmer. When he discovers her in human form, she ascends to heaven in awesome glory, but promises to return in his hour of need. Wolkstein has added an author's note to this version, made some editorial changes, and given the farmer a name. Young's black-and-white pencil drawings, repeating the spiraling moon snail motif while poignantly evoking the farmer's loss and White Wave's majesty, come to the new edition unchanged. They are now printed on matte paper with red borders and subtle illuminations of silver and look slightly more dramatic than they did in the earlier edition. Libraries with a clean copy of the older version may not need this new one. Wolkstein (Esther's Story, 1996, etc.) revisits an exquisite Chinese folktale she first published in 1979. The poor, solitary farmer of the original tale now has a name: Kuo Ming. He finds an opalescent shell and takes it home. The next evening, his dinner is waiting for him when he returns from the fields. He wonders how this happens, and, by spying, he discovers a woman of light, the moon goddess, who lives in the shell; he knows he must not touch her. In the way of such things, he cannot resist doing so, and thus loses her, but she leaves him her name, White Wave, and a promise that she keeps. He builds a shrine to her and tells his children the tale. When he dies, the shell is lost; the shrine, in time, disappears. ``All that remained was the story.'' The changes in the text may be too subtle to justify purchasing this newly designed edition where the old one is still available; Young's spare black-and-white pencil illustrations, with their gorgeous use of negative space, are unchanged. Still, where copies are tattered, or for those who missed it the first time around, this is a beautiful volume. (Picture book/folklore. 3-7) -- Copyright �1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. We All Have A Story!

Not only is White Wave a story of a farmer who loses something and someone he loves, it is a perfect story for others who have lost a loved one. It makes us remember and remind ourselves we all have a story, and how we live our lives will depend on the story others will tell about us. As an elementary teacher, I have read this story aloud hundreds of times. It is still as moving to me as it was the first time it was read aloud to me and a group of adults at a reading conference more than 25 years ago.

Taylor is the author of several best-selling novels, including Shadowmancer, Shadowmancer: The Curse of Salamander Street (winner of the Yorkshire Book of the Year Award 2007), Wormwood and Tersias. A former vicar of Cloughton in Yorkshire, he has enjoyed a varied career, moving from rock music to social work to ten years in the police force before his ordination. He now lives with his family in Scarborough.

A feast of language and adventure.

GP Taylor is an interesting writer. I read his first book Shadowmancer and its sequel some years ago and admired his impeccable use of language, while at the same time finding the bleakness of his vision somewhat off-putting. Taylor writes meanest of spirit and darkness of soul better than any writer I know.

I might have left it at that except that I came across the first of the Mariah Mundi books in a discount bookstore a couple of months ago and enjoyed it greatly. As a writer of young adult fiction, I have trod within the same territory; Victorian steampunk adventures in which magic vies with gothic technology to take centre stage. I was captivated by the relationship Mariah (who is a boy btw) forms with the girl, Sacha, and wanted to read more.

Mariah Mundi and the Ghost Diamonds is the second story in the trilogy and is a worthy read. Taylor doesn't disappoint in either language or storyline. This is a truly exciting adventure. You should buy and read it.

I was a little disappointed by the way Sacha is little more than a cipher in this novel. She was stronger in the first book and I love strong female characters. (I've been accused of creating a lot of them.) But that aside, this is an excellent read and well worth your time.

Great Book......but

I love Kyle Mills books. However, there are two things that I do not like about his writing. It takes about 35% of a book to set the stage for the rest of the book. The meat of the book is awesome. But then there is the ending. They all seem to end very suddenly with not closure or hints of future relationships or activities.

Great story but pushed limits of beleivability

This was a great story, even better than a Clancy book - more action and less verbage. The main character is again Mark Beamon, an older and slightly used up FBI agent put out to pasture as Special Agent in Charge at the Phoenix office. He gets pulled into a complicated case by his former partner Laura Vilechi who has been placed in charge of finding a missing rocket launcher held by Yasin, a powerful Afghan terrorist. The case gets much more complicated involving Volkov, a powerful drug lord and other drug dealers, the mafia, CIA bosses, and his own FBI boss. I would love to see another Beamon story but I do not know where Mr. Mills could possibly take him further.

About the Author
Alicia Gibb is an advocate for open hardware, a researcher, and a hardware hacker. Alicia has worked within the open source hardware community since 2008. She is the founder and Executive Director of the Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA), an organization to educate and promote building and using open source hardware. She directs the BTU Lab at CU Boulder, where she teaches in the areas of physical computing and information technologies. Previous to serving OSHWA, Alicia was a researcher and prototyper at Bug Labs where she ran the academic research program and the Test Kitchen, an open R&D Lab. She was awarded a National Science Foundation SBIR grant for her sensor-based data collection module while at Bug Labs. She is a member of NYCResistor, where she has curated two international art shows, founded and co-chaired two Open Hardware Summits, and sits on the board of the Ada Initiative. Her electronics work has appeared in Wired magazine, IEEE Spectrum, Hackaday and the New York Times . When Alicia is not researching at the crossroads of open technology and innovation she is prototyping work that twitches, blinks, and might even be tasty to eat.

Great overview, but lacks a little in substance. Odds are, if you're buying this book, you know what open source means and the benefits, and you are looking for more substantial information on actual design and manufacturing tips. Not stories about open source companies.

Excellent Resource

Alicia and the team of expert contributors to this book offer a great cross-section of knowledge to help people navigate the waters of open source hardware. The entire book is intriguing and needed to be written in my opinion. We will see how this whole movement pans out, but the book is honest about the snapshot it takes towards open source hardware. I think everyone starting out in electronics ought to give this a read.

This book is one you can judge by it's cover. It is everything you need to know about how to work on an open hardware project from cradle to grave. It is a solidly researched book that doesn't skip an issue because it is hard, nor is all the content from one person or organization. This has produced a product which is informative to a degree that it is greater than the sum of it's parts.

Fair warning: No matter how fast you read, do not expect to churn through this one in a day or two. It is dense information which while invaluable, will take a bit to correlate and digest. Take the time to do so; it is well worth the effort. Consider this book professional development for the hardware maker regardless of specific area of skill or interest.

This book will occupy a prominent place on my bookshelf as a reference guide, and I am no noob in the movement. I have several open hardware projects under my belt, having presented these at several maker faires I was able to attend. One of my projects is even mentioned in the book (Ground Sphere satellite ground station receiver, pp 142). My point is that in spite of my experience, I learned a lot from the work that Alicia Gibb clearly put into this masterpiece.

If you are involved in the open hardware movement in any aspect, or intend to be, you cannot do without this book. Not only does it contain all the information you need, including checklists in the back, it also contains a list of additional sources that read like a who's who of the movement and companies you need to have on speed dial.

Excellent introduction to Paul's interaction with contemporary literature in the Second Temple Era

In a word, this book is brilliant. The writing is cogent and engaging, the content is relevant and useful, the organization and flow of the essays is seamless, and the overall result is an accessible, valuable contribution to the ongoing conversation about how we can more fully appreciate Paul's writings under the illumination of his religion and culture.

Although the book is a collection of 20 relatively short (seven or eight page) essays written by separate authors, it doesn't read that way. There is remarkable consistency in the organization, rhetorical approach, logical flow, and even the illustrations among the various chapters. Each essay addresses a small section of Romans, in canonical sequence; comparing and contrasting that section with a religious or historical text from the Second Temple era that contains similar themes and ideas, and ultimately helps us understand better how Paul incorporated those familiar elements in his premises, arguments, and conclusions.

The pattern of each essay is regular. First, the author(s) states the basic theme of the section and describes how it fits into the surrounding context. Next, the extra-biblical text is introduced and analyzed for relevance, and then compared and contrasted with Paul's writing to see how he used familiar vocabulary and cultural context as connection points for his argumentation. In each case there is considerable overlap, but Paul eventually makes a rhetorical turn to demonstrate or highlight how the Christ event changed, or even reversed, our understanding of God's work and objectives in history and eschatology.

In addition to providing deeper insight into Paul's writing in its cultural context, the book serves another valuable purpose. It provides a broad, nontechnical introduction to the important and ongoing dialog about the relationship between Paul and Second Temple Judaism. Delving into this topic by engaging directly with the writings of Wright and Sanders starts the initiate down a long and daunting path that stretches back to Schweitzer, Luther, Augustine, and even Plato, with numerous rabbit chases along the way. The opening introductory chapter and successive collection of essays in this book shortcut that path significantly, and it serves as an effective launching pad for this journey. Additional resources listed at the end of each chapter provide even further help in that regard. There is also a comprehensive glossary of potentially unfamiliar terms that are common to this subject at the back of the book, and when those words occur in the running text they are highlighted in bold font.
A corollary benefit of this approach to putting Paul in context is the interaction with a wide range of important apocryphal, apocalyptic, and historic texts that are not commonly read or studied by nonspecialists. During the course of the book, the reader encounters books that include the Wisdom of Solomon, Tobit, Jubilees, Sirach, The Epistle of Enoch, the Greek Life of Adam and Eve, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the writings of Philo and Josephus.

The contributors to this work are an emerging group of Pauline scholars from Durham University and it is exciting to see them standing on the shoulders of their masters, helping us peer further into the mind of Paul. This book is definitely not some esoteric rehashing of previous material. It is obvious that they have not only learned well, but they are challenging their teachers and starting to surpass them. We can look forward to some fresh advances from them in this field.

In summary, this book provides a framework for deeper understanding of the book of Romans at multiple levels of discourse by introducing readers to, and then examining, Paul's use of cultural semaphores that would connect implicitly with his audience. And further, it does it in a way that is interesting, informative, balanced, and readily understandable even to those who are new to the subject. Beyond its value for personal study, I think it would also make an excellent study guide for the book of Romans in a group setting.

Interesting look at what other Jews where teaching in contrast to Paul's teachings in Romans

"Reading Romans in Context" is an essay collection that looked at various themes found in Romans and in Second Temple Jewish literature. Paul sometimes counters an argument that he apparently believes will be brought against his teachings, but it's not always clear what that argument is. By looking at Second Temple Jewish literature (like the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Dead Sea Scrolls, and the writings of Philo or Josephus), we can discover what other Jews around that time were teaching. The authors compare these to Romans to find similarities and where the teachings diverge.

The authors had a good understanding of Paul's teachings and used the comparison to add insights and nuances to our understanding of Romans (not to reinterpret them). I found the essays interesting, especially the one on distinctive food habits. I didn't have any trouble following their arguments. There was a glossary in the back, but the terms were defined well enough in the text that I never needed to use it. I'd recommend this book to those interested in this topic.

Phrases and themes that were studied were: "son of God," God's wrath and divine justice, circumcision and covenant identity, "works of the law," "righteousness of God," the faith of Abraham, suffering of the righteous, death through Adam, slavery to sin or to righteousness, the Law's role, evil desires, human glorification linked to death, why God blesses or curses a person, righteousness by law vs. by faith and one's ability to keep the Law, Gentile inclusion, right living--self mastery vs. divine enabling, how one should interact with the government, distinctive food habits, God's role in our giving to the poor, and women in church ministry and leadership.

Superb book. Just what was needed.

This book is a sane, careful analysis of Paul's relationship to the Jewish literature of his day filtered the themes of the book of Romans in a series of brilliant essays. All of the important Second Temple literature is judiciously discussed. Although some of the history in the introduction is weak (which isn't a huge point because numerous books treat the subject quite thoroughly) the further bibliographical resources are extremely strong, just about all that could be desired. The real meat of the book is the essays, which follow the outline of Romans. Each essay sets a Jewish text and its themes in comparison and contrast with Paul. Paul virtually always brings a significant change to the table. The danger is the essays being too long and boringly technical, or being too short and superficial. Further texts on the same topic are noted. The essays all strike the perfect balance to make an extremely useful book which is accessible both to the interested layman and the scholar, and the book succeeds marvelously at demonstrating exactly why this literature is so important for really understanding Paul.

The complete book of crap

Upon initial reading, this book appears to be an honest effort of the author, however upon further reading, I found that much of the exact same information (verbatim) can be found at www.astrology-online.com. I feel cheated, like I've waisted my money. Besides having to reread common information (which is free elsewhere), I was annoyed by the author's subjective, opinionated (rather negative), and biased delivery of descriptions of the star signs. Johnston seemed to favor signs of certain elements while playing up the negativity of others. This book seemed initially to be fun, but who wants to read constant negativity about star signs. The author removed the joy of astrology from some of the book, instead creating an astrological hierarchy competition. Overall this book does offer some good basic information. Due to the lack of new data however, along with the author's bias, I give this book one star for effort.

Simply Astounding

I have long searched for a book that easily profiles each sign and its characteristic behaviours. I am very pleased with this title, and have used it to further understand my co-workers, my friends, family, and even my girlfriend. I highly recommend this book.
I will however comment, that I have found that though the personology is extremely accurate, I will say that the "signs in love" section leaves much to desire.

This is a great book.

This is one that I'll definitely use as a teacher. I usually sell my books back, but plan to keep this one forever! It has a lot of fun anti-bias activities for children to do, that cost little-to-nothing for a teacher to plan. Lots of fun, very easy to plan, great book. :)

Martin Gurvich, director of the Museum of Sacred Art (Belgium, Italy) and the Gurvich Museum (Uruguay), is an avid art collector and connoisseur. Martin s passion for art seems natural given his lineage as the son of renowned artist Jos� Gurvich (1927-1974), who left behind an impressive art repertoire. Martin has published the book Living Traditions in Indian Art and several catalogues documenting the work by the artists in MOSA collection. He is also a member of ISKCON, Hindu Forum (Europe) and URI, a global interfaith organization. < Sushma K. Bahl, MBE, is the author of 5000 Years of Indian Art and former head of Arts & Culture for the British Council India. She is also an independent arts adviser, writer and curator and organizes festivals and cultural projects internationally. Sushma was involved with the Triennale-India (guest director), Bharat Rang Mahotsav (project consultant), Asian Art Biennale-Bangladesh (jury member) and ASEAN-India artists residency & exhibition (curator). The art exhibition Ways of Seeing she curated won the IHC Art India Award. Dr. George Michell trained as an architect in Melbourne and studied Indian art and archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. For more than 30 years he has worked on many research projects in India, most notably documenting the ruins of Hampi, Vijayanagara. Cyber Security Basics is a great book for those looking to learn the information security fundamentals. Don starts off be sharing the "Defenders dilemma" and moves through the various defensive techniques that make enterprises resilient from cyber attacks. I really like how Don distilled complex cyber security topics and explained them with clarity and simplicity. Don defines traditional and modern terms in an easy to read format and also nicely categorizes the commonly used security acronyms. I would recommend this book for early practitioners, those looking to expand their knowledge of the security space and those looking to build security into their program.
