A great book,very glad to have read something on George Montgomery….I think he's been a bit neglected. I'd like to see the author do a book on maybe the next tier of western actors e.g. Rory Calhoun,Rod Cameron,Jock Mahoney,Dale Robertson etc as the writer really knows his subject

A trip through deep time

I have to agree with oakshaman--this is one of the best books on the geologic evolution of North America that I've come across. First published in 1959, the edition that I own does not deal with plate tectonics (a subject that was hotly debated at the time, and generally not taken very seriously), so at least some of the continent-building forces that elude King have since been identified. Nonetheless, this book is still a wonderful introduction to the landforms of North America. As oakshaman notes, the maps and geologic cross-sections are particularly informative. Any books on the subject published since this volume came out build on the solid foundation that Philip B. King laid so many years ago.

A Geological Classic

I read the first edition of Philip B. King's "The Evolution of North America" 38 years ago when I took a course in "Tectonics" from John W. Shelton as a graduate student at Oklahoma State University. I reread it in the second edition (which contains an outline of plate tectonics) a few years later while I was in industry. I reread the book again in 1990 when I was putting together a course in historical geology at University of Missouri-Rolla. I purchased copies for two of my children when they graduated (as newly minted geologists) from college. In my opinion this is the best written book on the subject of geology that has ever been published. Philip B. King was arguably the greatest field geologist of the 20th century and had a wealth of experience that he shares in a relaxed, conversational tone. The book reads like a novel; it is as though he is in the room talking to you! King's illustrations are classic and in some respects "fine art". I was told by geologists who knew him (unfortunately I never met Dr. King) that he would sit on outcrops for hours making sketches, many of which ended up as illustrations in this book. Even though the book is in many respects dated, it still contains a great wealth of observations and data that are as important today as they were 40 years ago. So if you are a geologist and have never read "The Evolution of North America", it is time that you did. If you are just an interested non-geologist, you will enjoy the book too. It does not require specialized training to read this book.

It's an Excellent Book. And Brings Back Some Fond Memories.

I'm now a retired Geology Professor from San Diego State University. I first started teaching in the mid 60s. In the early 70s inherited a senior-level course titled Geology of North America. The course was required for no one, but it always had a fairly good enrollment, especially with graduate students who claimed that it was just what they needed to do well on their Graduate Record Exam. I chose the textbook "The Evolution of North America (Hard Cover)," which was by far the best text around. Unfortunately, it had a flaw. This was almost exactly at the time when the Plate Tectonics Revolution was going through and the book was quickly out of date. Fortunately, P. B. King was able to revise it and bring all the nomenclature up to modern usage. The rocks or structure don't change but the names we apply change with the evolving concepts, and this was certainly the case with this book. But, the Revised Edition was every bit as good as the original edition and I got a new Paperback from the book sales representative in thanks for adopting it. Well, I was delighted it was still around and in print as it has been one of the finest geology textbooks I have ever known. It is clearly and plainly written and well illustrated. Look closely at a lot of the illustrations and you'll find they are hand drawn. I might add, they're drawn by P. B. King himself. It's an excellent book, and if you want another little nostalgic note, I turn the book over and look at the price printed on the back cover. It says $9.50 (at least it says that on my copy). I guess I should have bought a couple hundred and salted them away. Who would have ever thunk?

Let me just conclude this review with a little story. Sometime about the early 70s, I was put in charge of our department's Visiting Speaker Series. So who does one ask to be a speaker? Well, not knowing any better, I went for the best (I might add that they're also the hardest to get.). I sent a letter to P. B. King at the U. S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California. He said he'd be delighted to come down and speak to our department and he wondered how I ever thought of him. That's really funny in that he was one of the biggest names in North American Geology. In any case, he agreed. On the day of his talk I had to go down to the airport and pick him up and I had no idea what he looked like. A whole series of images flashed through my mind and most of them visualized him as a distinguished-looking, gray-haired man in an expensive suit. I stood near the plane and watched and watched and I just couldn't spot any one. Finally, near the end of the 180 or so people getting off the plane, a smallish, somewhat scruffy man in a buckskin jacket, field boots and carrying a big roll of maps under his arm emerged. Quite obviously, it was P. B. King. I didn't even have to ask. In any case, he gave a wonderful talk and every one in the department appreciated his visit. As he departed, he again thanked me for the invitation and said that if I ever needed anything to do with the Geological Survey, he'd be happy to dip an oar in for me. Ah, yes. P. B. King. Enjoy the book.

Demon Slave (Shadow Quest Book 2) , A Review for Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and Fantasy

Demon Slave starts off from where we left Sebastian, Analia, Marik, Sonya and Ethan.. attempting to find one of Analia's missing sisters. Kiersten Fay does an excellent job of making this a stand alone book and yet still weaving so very much of story arc into the book. I was impressed with her ability to make a reader feel comfortable whether they had read Demon Possession or not... for what it's worth I would suggest that you read this series in order, I know there's a shocker, but so far both books stand alone beautifully!!

Stranded on the icy planet of Undewla, Marik is captured by the natives, A strange people who thrive in the winter wasteland, are actually burn when they touch a warm blooded being. The people fear the Demon race convinced they are a barbaric, evil race of beings set soley on destruction and conquest. Although captured he is determined to locate Analia's older sister and "free" her from this world. What he doesn't realize is she has no need to be freed and is in fact the acting queen.

Nadula has been placed in a position of power by the former King, until his daughter comes of age she is to lead her people.. As in all monarchies, dissension reigns in the ranks and there is a movement to over throw the "false" queen and place another on the throne. Among those in the rebellion are some of her most trusted guards..

It is actually quite a comedy of errors, the guards, barely restrain Marik, wanting him to escape and either kill Nadula or leave her where they can kill her and blame him. Nadula, is trying out her rusty seduction skills trying to find out why Marik is there and when the rest of the conquering hordes of barbarians will ascend upon them.. *grins* Ms Fey does a wonderful job sharing with us the difficulties involved in attempting to be sexy when one must remain covered in fur (and not some smooth glamorous fur but rather something akin to a grizzly/mastodon combination). And then there is Marik, determined to remain a captive and allow the army to take him to the rulers, hopefully to find Analia's missing sister..

Marik, who had been enslaved before Sebastian, Calic and Sonya found and freed him had a deep seeded fear of slavery. The very act of being bound brings forth an inner rage that looses a beserker type rage and yet he manages to hold back his rage in order to accomplish his quest. Learning the new language he realizes discovers the plot and kidnaps Nadula from beneath the very noses of guards and enemies alike. Together they traverse the country seeking the rendezvous point with Analia and Sebastien.. along the way they find that trust is an important commodity even among supposed enemies.. and they gather an assortment of allies.

Finding one's Mate is supposed to be a thing of joy and yet Marik fears his rages, knowing he will kill any female he is around when he is set off. His years of slavery having destroyed what little humanity he had or so he thought. And yet Nadula, soon learns that she is safest in his arms, that her visions of the future are incomplete and that her visions of his past can heal his wounded soul.

Together they find a way to save a dynasty.. back the throne and reunite with the crew of the Madaras.. It is fun to see Analia coming more and more into her powers and confidence.. the peeks we are given of her giving Sebastian what for are pure joy... Sonya and Ethan are back and we meet a new Demon, Rex.. Oh the stories I am sure Ms Fey has lined up for us.. I can already see them and can't wait to see how she weaves them.

Enjoy the Shadow Quest Series, savor it.. it is a delight to the senses....

Well, I was expecting another fantastic book by Kierstan Fay but I was a little dis-appointed. There wasn't enought of a connection for me between Marik and Nadua, it seems that I still don't know much about Marik except from what Nadua saw thru him, Marik was never much of the talker between the two of them. I did not like that she added quite a few pages about Sonya and Ethan too, don't get me wrong, I want a story about Sonya and Ethan but not in this book. I felt like KF needed pages to fill so she added a few scenes between Sonya and Ethan. This ebook was not as intense as the first one. I would have given it another 4 star but for the money that I spent on this ebook I felt a little short changed. Not enough of a story for me for the price. Please Kiersten F let your next book be BETTER!!!

I really loved this book. It was an excellent read.I was rooting for Marik to finally find love considering
the lost of not being able to save his sister. I was yearning for more also from Ethan and Sonya 's characters. This
series is truly amazing. I can't wait for the next book.

About the Author
Theodore J. Lowi has been John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions at Cornell University since 1972. He was elected President of the American Political Science Association in 1990 and was cited as the political scientist who made the most significant contribution to the field during the decade of the 1970s. Among his numerous books are The End of Liberalism and The Pursuit of Justice, on which he collaborated with Robert F. Kennedy.

Benjamin Ginsberg is the David Bernstein Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Center for Advanced Governmental Studies at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the author or coauthor of 25 books, including Presidential Power: Unchecked and Unbalanced; Downsizing Democracy: How America Sidelined Its Citizens and Privatized Its Public; Politics by Other Means; The Consequences of Consent; The Worth of War; and The Captive Public. Ginsberg received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1973. Before joining the Hopkins faculty in 1992, Ginsberg was Professor of Government at Cornell. His most recent books are The Fall of the Faculty: The Rise of the All-Administrative University and Why It Matters; What the Government Thinks of the People; and Analytics, Policy and Governance.

Kenneth A. Shepsle is the George D. Markham Professor of Government and founding member of the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University. He is the author or coauthor of several books, including Politics in Plural Societies: A Theory of Democratic Instability; The Giant Jigsaw Puzzle: Democratic Committee Assignments in the Modern House; Models of Multiparty Electoral Competition; Making and Breaking Governments; and Analyzing Politics: Rationality, Behavior, and Institutions. He has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1990, and he is the recipient of fellowships by the Hoover Institution, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.

Stephen Ansolabehere is Professor of Government at Harvard University. He is the coauthor of The Media Game and Going Negative: How Political Advertising Alienates and Polarizes the American Electorate, which was awarded the Goldsmith Book Prize. His articles have appeared in The American Political Science Review, The Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and Public Opinion Quarterly. He has been awarded fellowships by the Carnegie Corporation Fellowship and the Hoover Institution. He served as a codirector of the CalTech/MIT Voting Project, established in the wake of the 2000 presidential election to evaluate the current state of the reliability and uniformity of U.S. voting systems and to propose uniform guidelines and requirements for reliable voting and performance.

An Awesome Intro to American Politics Text

I had to take this politics class for my major in history. To be honest, I really did not want to take it. I wanted to know how our government is supposed to work, but I am so fed up with politicians that I didn't want to have to spend an entire semester reading about them. I'm glad I did. This text is excellent. It is very good at going through all the different terminology in regards to Political Science, but also tells about how the govenment is supposed to work (as envisioned by the Founder's) and how and why it is where it is today. For anyone who is wanting to learn all the various aspects of our Federal government and how it relates to the states and local governments (which should be all Americans) then this text would be a great place to start.
