This is a life transforming book - highly recommended!

Holy cow - where to begin... Last fall I enrolled in a coach-facilitated Now What Program based on this book. It was a commitment - the process involved a weekly group meeting for about 10 weeks coupled with weekly homework (read a chapter of the book, complete the assignments in the book). The homework required a lot of introspection and reflection - this was a time commitment. It was often frustrating to be thinking about, but not knowing, what my "it" was and whether it would ever become clear. The process revealed patterns I was aware of but learned anew - this excellent book coupled with expert coaching/facilitation made that possible. By the end of the program I had clarity about which of two disparate paths I wanted to go down. Since that time that clarity has crystalized into something amazing that I never saw coming. In short, I realized that, at this moment, I am exactly where I need and want to be (and I haven't changed a thing about my employment situation). What I intend and want to do in the future is only slightly different from, yet is 100% congruent with, what I am currently doing. This epiphany is a complete game changer. I no longer expending energy wondering "what if..." or "should I..." With this clarity, every thought - every action - is purposeful and propels me forward. I am energized in a way I haven't been in a long time and in a way I though might no longer be possible for me. I realize that I had been working very hard but not seeing the full fruit of my labors because my energies were divided due to indecision and uncertainty. What a gift I have been given. I feel truly blessed. If you are looking for clarify, you owe it to yourself to give this a try. Commit the time to the process described in this book. Believe me when I say I understand "busy" - but I was committed to the process and found the time - some weeks it was in 10 minute chunks here and there. Buy the book, complete one chapter at a time; don't move ahead until the chapter assignments are completed (I know this is hard - I wanted to read the whole book in a weekend and be handed enlightenment instantly). Be patient. Do the assignments - especially when you're frustrated. If you feel stuck, re-reach the chapter or sections of the book. Have a faith that the process can work; for me, the outcome is priceless!

Wonderful textbook!

This text book is incredibly thorough, yet concise. Understandable explanations and real-world examples make understanding and applying the concepts easy. The author's sense of humor makes the text that much more enjoyable. The sequencing of chapters and references within the chapters to past or future explanations is helpful. There are practice quizzes at the end of each chapter that are thought provoking and a good test of your understanding of the material. I highly recommend this book.

This was the textbook for my junior class. The author can be described as having a sense of humor which I have found rare in textbooks. The vocabulary is clear and concise and the chapters have a good progression for a new student in the field of SLP.

Perfect for my masters thesis

I read this book for my thesis which focuses on the rhetoric surrounding women in comedy. Really fantastic for my lit review section on the use of humor from marginalized groups to challenge hegemonic structures. Well written, easy to understand, and great for finding additional readings as they cite a lot of qualified scholars.

How difficult it is to talk about what is spiritual. We experience moments of "connection" to a "higher power"; times of "communion" with what we can only call our "soul." Yet the language we use doesn't come close to capturing the depth of the experiences themselves. Almost by definition, what takes place in the spiritual realm eludes description.

The stories in this collection nevertheless attempt to initiate a conversation, at least, about those elusive moments-in the context of travel. In some ways, one could say that all journeys are spiritual; by its very nature, journeying involves a leap of faith. We climb onto a train, strap ourselves into an airplane seat, or step onto a winding path with the fullest of hopes-and yet knowing nothing for certain about where the venture might actually lead us.

Perhaps that leap of faith is what makes our spiritual centers so accessible when we travel. In the act of moving from one place to another, somehow a space is created where, if we're lucky, a moment of clarity alights on us and offers a window into our natures, and the nature of everything around us. Travel to distant places has a way of opening a path inward, to possibility-to memory, even. After a while, the physical experience of travel somehow becomes less significant than the inner transformations we undergo: when, by moving through space, bumping up against strangeness and being changed by it, we somehow become more of who we are meant to be.

Ancient philosophers and contemporary mystics alike have proposed that we are conceived in the womb with a deep knowledge of everything, of all the secrets and mysteries of the universe, and that life is a process of "remembering": As we live and learn, we reconnect with knowledge that we already have; it is as if we simply draw back a veil so that we can see and understand it all anew. The stories in this volume have convinced my coeditors and me that the act of travel is a potent way indeed of calling forth that inner knowledge. To relearn what we already know on the deepest level; to wake up to it and allow it to change us. Such is the power of the spiritual journey.

But for women, the path of that journey takes on yet another dimension. Many of our childhood experiences of spirituality revolved around the sacred male image found in the Judeo-Christian tradition-which, implicitly and explicitly, often excluded us as females. Yet we know that other religions reject that focus on a wholly male God: Native American, Hindu, and African traditions are rich with imagery of female deities, and archeological evidence has pointed to long traditions of Goddess worship in ancient cultures all over the world.

The collection of essays that follows attempts to provide a forum in which, through our unique experiences as women, we might begin to find ways to reclaim, honor, and celebrate our spiritual power and wisdom: to explore what might be called the sacred feminine. You will read here of many kinds of women's excursions of the spirit-some in the context of faiths like Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism, while others venture into the realms of Goddess spirituality, shamanism, and African and Native American traditions. Still, many of these essays describe journeys that have less to do with worship than with explorations of inner spiritual strength, or even of deep connections to the spirits of particular places.

We begin and end with stories set along the classic pilgrim's trail, in which the traveler undertakes a spiritual quest by walking many weeks or months along a well-worn path. The first of these, Abigail Seymour's "Go Beyond!," takes place along Spain's Camino de Santiago that dates back to the Middle Ages; the last, Kelly Winters's "Trusting the Trail," occurs on the Appalachian Trail that runs 2,000 miles, from Georgia to Maine. Both lead the traveler to a kind of introspection and reckoning with herself and her beliefs that is nothing short of transformative.

But there are other ways of connecting to one's spirit than by setting out on a walking pilgrimage. Some of the women in these stories partake of the religious rites and rituals of wholly foreign cultures, such as Emily Zuzik does in "Going Without at Ramadan." Some women, like Sue Bender in "Sweat Lodge," do it by venturing into darkness, metaphorically and literally, in order to touch their own luminous centers. Some use travel as a way of healing physical and emotional wounds, or to test and push their inner strengths and limits, as does Linda Ellerbee in "No Shit! There I Was..." Others, like Maya Angelou in "Return to Keta," travel to foreign lands that they find strangely familiar, and where they encounter ancestors-or past lives-long forgotten by the conscious mind. And still others, like Jill Jepson in "Cave Temple of the Goddess," embark on their journeys as skeptical pilgrims-only to return with a new kind of faith.

What all of these journeys share, however, is their ability to convey the power of feminine spiritual transformation--of its possibilities and directions, of its contingency and freedom, of its poetry and joy. And although this book cannot provide any fixed direction-markers for other cartographers of the spirit, it is our hope that the stories here will serve as gentle spurs for those who desire to embark on such a journey for themselves.

This book was in a VRBO rental we were visiting. I started to read it on vacation and purchased a copy for myself after I got home. Since it is a compilation of many writers, some of the essays spoke to more than others but all of them were interesting.

Classic, so good that it's back in print

My father read the original Doc Savage pulps when he was a teen ager with money his father gave him for enteratinment. Years later, when Bantam Books reprinted them, he bought each and every one for me as they came out. There's nothing like a Doc Savage adventure (except for the next Doc Savage adventure) and I still thrill to new issues as the latest set bearing the original covers and closer to original size Nostalgia editions dribble out into public view.

Years later, when Farmer wrote Tarzan Alive I ate that book up, reading several times in a row. So deep and wonderful, connecting all these fantasy characters together in a manner I'd never seen before. It was one of my first encounters with the guy who would become one of my favorite authors. But this isn't really about that.

Finding Farmer's treatise on Doc Savage on my local bookstore's shelves was nothing short of amazing. Shorter and more accessible than the epic Tarzan Alive effort, due to the focused subject, His Apocalyptic Life quickly became a favorite that was re-read and referenced on a regular basis. Surely when I had a chance to visit the Empire State Building later in life, I thrilled as I passed the 86th floor knowing what lay on the other side.

But enough fancy and fantasy. This is a solid book, a great addition for any Doc fan. Especially those who have read all the original series, and those who may be discovering the additional tales penned by Farmer and Murray. Highly recommended.

Note: if you've read this book before, it's worth picking up the 2013, Meteor House, hardcover (revised, expanded) edition again for the additional material included. It's the third copy on my shelf, and I don't regret it's purchase at all!

A lot of fun

Doc Savage is one of those enduring pulp icons who will always have a cult following no matter how many years pass since his heyday. The creation of writer Lester Dent, Doc Savage was a combination private eye/crusading scientist/super hero who, with the help of his loyal assistant, managed to defeat some of the most evil threats that mankind has ever had to face. Certainly a bit corny but always a great deal of fun, the Doc Savage tales were always amongst the best of their type and, as the world continues to get more and more complicated, there's something wonderfully reassuring about entering into Doc Savage's world and discovering that evil can always be defeated by one bronze skinned genius. For this reason, Doc Savage continues to maintain a loyal fan base into the present day. One of these fans was the late science fiction writer Phillip Jose Farmer (creator of the Riverworld series and several other underground classics). Farmer wrote Doc Savage, His Apocalyptic Life as an obvious labor of love. While he goes out of his way to try to accurately document the mythos of Doc Savage (though some critics are correct when they point out that he sometimes draws conclusions that are far more Farmer than Dent), Farmer does so with a welcomed tone of uptmost (if still bemused) seriousness. Treating this book as not just a long fan letter but instead as an actual biography of an actual man, Farmer affords Doc Savage fans a dignity that others who have attempted to write about classic pulp icons haven't.
The book to a certain extent acts as a sequel to Farmer's better known (but, to me, of lesser quality) Tarzan Alive. As in the Tarzan book, Farmer concludes with lengthy and imaginative geneaology in which he manages (with not too many excessive liberties taken with their established canons) to show that every pulp hero was in some way related. Along with Tarzan, Doc Savage is soon to be related to Bulldog Drummond, James Bond, Nero Wolfe, The Scarlet Pimpernil, Prof. Challenger, the Shadow, and just about anyone else you could think of. No, its not meant to be taken seriously but, like the original Doc Savage stories themselves, its still a lot of fun.

Doc Savage: His Apocalyptical Life by Philip Jose Farmer

Doc Savage was the hero of Doc Savage magazine, first published in March 1933. It lasted for 181 issues, the last being released Summer 1949. Doc was a super-man, fantastically intelligent, skilled at every major (and minor) science. He was immensely strong as well, the result of a two hour workout he does every day without fail.

Taught by masters the world over, Doc is a master of disguise, a linguist of tremendous versatility, skilled in woodcraft and tracking, and expert in any number of unarmed self-defense tactics.

His Fabulous Five are men he first met in a WWI prison camp. They are highly skilled in their profession, acknowledging only one superior—Doc Savage himself. His men are:

Lt. Colonel Andrew Blogget “Monk” Mayfair an industrial chemist. He is also famous for his pet pig “Habeas Corpus” and long running feud with “Ham” Brooks.
Brigadier General Theodore Marley “Ham” Brooks, perhaps the finest lawyer ever produced by the Harvard Law School. He is known for sartorial perfection in dressing, an ever-present sword cane, his pet ape “Chemistry”, and his long running feud with “Monk” Mayfair.
Colonel John “Renny” Renwick, an engineer known the world over for building roads, bridges, buildings, and dams. He is also famous for two of the largest hands in existence and for knocking panels out of doors.

This is a wonderful erotic romance. I loved Lisa and Matthew. They are perfect portrayals of the everyday couple, and that authenticity only serves to make them real and loving characters. More, they have the added difficulties of being from different backgrounds, concerning both class and race, and that was a great addition to these two awesome people. Moreover, the sex between these two is amazing. It is hot and primal, and very romantic in its own sensual way. The only fault I found in this story is pacing. The plot moves way too fast, and that didn't make it as convincing a reconciliation as it could have been. But all in all, this is a story about love, and a worthy one at that. - Athena

The wife had to practically beg for another chance and after the way she had treated him, she should have. I think he should have kept walking. They had plenty of make-up sex, but it seem to me the wife was still telling him what to do, when to show up, and that she would have the kids. I don' think this couple solve anything and the thoughts they had about their situation should have been shared with one another.

Not only is this a great book, it was cheap, in much better condition than expected (don't think it has ever been opened) and we have not found any other book that covers Balinese Birds in such detail, the Indonesian Ornithology books, although much bigger have never given us answers for what we have been looking at in Bali. A friend had this book and although it has all the answers we were looking for, we were told in Bali that it was out of print !

SIZZLING HOT!!!!

This book will definitely heat up all those long cold winter nights. Not just a warm comfy blanket type of warmth, but a rip roaring sizzling flame type of warmth. Morina Morgan and Pete Altman had been attracted to one another since the moment they lay eyes on one another. He was a play boy and she was the girl who didn't want anything to do with his charming ways. BUT, that all changed one evening when they both got caught up in a blizzard. The question as you read this short tale of pleasure, will their relationship make it past the one night? Will they share any more Christmas times together? Will the pair become one once again? Guess y'all have to read and find out. This is one read you don't want to pass up. Gather up the fans to cool yourself off after you indulge into some intense pleasure.

Morina Morgan had been avoiding the real estate mogul, Pete Altman. She knew he was a womanizer and wanted nothing to do with him. Well, he wanted her. So with his sister's help he got Morina to go to DC when a snow storm was to hit to meet with him over some property. This was just to get her there. When he made him way to the house, he undressed and she was amazed at the site. They made love hot and heavy something that he had never done before. He had just had sex, but this was different. They tried at least fifty different way to enjoy each other that were in the Kama Sutra. When they could leave it was a week later and then I leave you with guessing what happens. Ju really knows how to hold you attention when reading.

A Hot Short Story!

Morina and Pete met a few years ago and have liked each other ever since, but they decided not to do anything about it. Well, Morina actually did because she was scared to let herself fall for him. Pete, on the other hand did everything in his power to get with Morina. He just could not get her out of his mind and desperately wanted to know if his feelings for her ran deeper than what the eye could meet. So when fate presented a chance for him to find out, he took more than advantage of the situation and finally got what he had been after. Just as expected sparks flew ... hot enough that it could have set the house on fire. If you like steamy romance novels and currently looking for a new read, I would definitely give this book a try.
