This is a powerful wonderfully written easy to understand book that clearly reveals God's Plan for All. It's an eye opening book that explains the True Gospel of Jesus Christ and the TRUTH about WHO The ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD really is. It reveals the truth of the BIBLE without adding or taking away from the INSPIRED WORD OF GOD and reveals the many FALSE DOCTRINES being taught by MAINSTREAM CHRISTIANITY today. The ordinary mind is like a dumb, driven animal, while the Master Mind is like the strong-willed, intelligent, masterful Man. The average man is a very slave to his thoughts and feelings. A stream of thought and feeling flows through him, moving him hither and thither with little or no voluntary choice on his own part. Even those men who have attained a certain degree of mental mastery do but little more than to feebly steer their mental bark by the rudder of a wobbling will—they do not realize that Mastery is possible to them. Even a well known writer has said: ‘’We do not voluntarily create our thinking. It takes place in us. We are more or less passive recipients. We cannot change the nature of a thought; but we can, as it were, guide the ship by a moving of the helm.’’ It would be truer to say that we can deliberately and voluntarily select and choose the particular wind which is to force our mental boat forward or, changing the figure, to choose and select the particular stream of thought and feeling which is to be allowed to flow through our mind. There are three general conditions of human mentality, viz.: (1) Mental Slavery, in which the mind is the slave and servant of outside forces and influences; (2) Partial Freedom, in which the mind is largely controlled by outside influences, while at the same time a limited amount of voluntary control and direction has been acquired; and (3) Mental Mastery, in which the mental faculties, and emotional organism have been brought under the control of the will and judgment, and the individual is a master of, and not a slave to, environment and circumstances. The great masses of persons are in the first or the above named classes; a comparatively small number have passed into the second class; while a still smaller number have passed into the third class, and have become the Master Minds of their time and place.

Get your mind right

Master Mind by Theron Dumont is a phenomenal work that explains that life is about filling/playing one of two roles, master or slave. A master is one who creates his circumstances. Everyone has at one point or another been a subject of circumstance. However, a slave is one who is the continual victim of circumstances or continually being subjected to external impressions. Master Mind explains how the being of man is represented by a chariot and his Real Self represents the rein, the will: the steeds, the mental states of feeling, emotion, desire, imagination, and the rest. Unless the reigns be strong, they will not be sufficient to control the horses. Unless the charioteer be trained and vigilant, the horses will run away with the chariot and dash to pieces the driver in the general wreck. But controlled and mastered, the fiery steeds will lead forward to attainment and accomplishment, and at the same time will travel the road in safety. Master Mind reiterates and teaches the importance of mastering ones feelings, emotions, desires, thoughts, and most importantly the will. It explains the difference between voluntary and involuntary action. It also discusses the importance of attention and perception. The real question that it all boils down to is mastery or servitude, and if this is what you're currently asking yourself, then this is definitely the book for you. Man must be either the anvil or the hammer. Let each make his choice, and then complain not. Master Mind will definitely cause you to reevaluate all the activities that you face in your life and you how address/perform them. Thus said, if you are a hammer strike your fill, and if you are an anvil stand you still!

Here's a great author that I just discovered!!!

Up until last week, I'd never read anything by Don Winslow, or even heard of him for that matter. Another book reviewer recommended him to me, suggesting that I start with either Winslow's newest novel, The Dawn Patrol, or his book, California Fire and Life. What I did was buy both of them, along with Winslow's The Winter of Frankie Machine, which is being turned into a major motion picture by Robert DeNiro. I got them last weekend and quickly read The Dawn Patrol, thinking that it was going to be hard to get into because Southern California surfing is a major part of the book, and I've never been a big fan of surfing in general. I ended up falling head over heels in love with the novel and devoured it in two days. Now, I'm in the middle of Frankie Machine, praying the DeNiro will finish the movie adaptation of it and that the film will be out within the next year or two.

The Dawn Patrol refers to Boone Daniels and the small group of people that meet him every morning to surf the waves of Pacific Beach in San Diego. It also refers to the men who pick-up little girls every morning further up the coast so that they can sexually abuse them for the day. Daniels, who is now a private investigator after having served on the San Diego Police Department for three years, gets hired for a case that has him tracking down a female witness, who saw members of the Mob burning down a warehouse. The men who instigated the arson want the woman killed and in up murdering the wrong person by mistake. Daniels therefore has to find the real witness before the killers do and this inadvertently leads him to child sex ring operation and the evil people behind it. When Daniels was a police officer, he lost his job by doing the right thing and it led to a missing child never being found again. Daniels blames himself for that and still searches for the little girl during his spare time. Because of that, he won't allow any child to be abused if it's within his power to do something about it. The people behind the sex ring are going to have their hands full when Daniels starts hunting them with extreme prejudice, sensing that this is one way he can atone for his past mistake, even if it means his own death in the process.

I can't say enough good things about Don Winslow and The Dawn Patrol. I'm totally lost as to why this author isn't hitting the New York Times Bestseller list with every new novel that comes out. The Dawn Patrol is written with clear, sharp prose that brings to life Southern California and the surfing community, the city of San Diego, and the vast array of unusual and bizarre characters that inhabit this intense journey into the darkness of man's soul. Though quite serious at times, the novel is also funny in parts with Daniel's laid-back attitude about life and his close friends...that is until he begins the hunt for retribution. This is also the type of novel that you pray will eventually have a sequel to it. I don't know what Winslow is writing right now, but I hope Boone Daniels is definitely in it. This is a character that you quickly learn to care about and to root for as he takes out the bad guys. It's also important to note that the members of the surfing Dawn Patrol are also clearly portrayed as full and interesting characters, with each one playing an important part in the story. Highly recommended to those who love the PI genre and are looking for something slightly different, but that is well written with great characters, unbelievable suspense, and an ending you'll never see coming.

Boone Daniels is the ultimate California surfer stereotype: lean and athletic, laid back, unflappable, and not ready to let trivial "civilian" interests like job, family, or typical responsibilities associated with adulthood interfere with mother ocean and the perfect wave. With his colorful "dawn patrol" posse of Dave "the God to Women", kid "Hang Twelve", the massive Samoan "High Tide", San Diego cop Johnny Banzai, and his female alter ego and sometimes sex partner Sunny Day, Boone and the crew are in the surf each morning at daybreak passing time - like compiling lists of the best things in life - while waiting for the next big ride. Boone is a former SDPD cop himself with some demons of his own lurking beneath his chill exterior - now a private investigator of sorts, content with working enough to only keep him in adequately stocked in fish tacos and board wax. When the foxy but uptight aspiring lawyer Petra shows up with an insurance company gig, Boone is conflicted: he could use the "jangle", but an underwater disturbance in the Aleutians is sending a freight train of monster waves to the Southern Cal coast unlike anything that's been seen in decades, and certainly not an event that a hardcore surfer like Boone would even consider missing. Nobody can capture Southern California's beaches and bimbos better than the talented Don Winslow, and "Dawn Patrol" is a terrific example of the artist at his most righteous. Winslow's seemingly mismatched cast of characters is brilliant - he captures a credible cast in staccato chapters shredding across the pages in dialog that is authentic, witty and cynically funny - all of Carl Hiaasen's black humor, but where Hiaasen has a tendency to dis his denizens of south Florida, Winslow's playful barbs reflects a deep and sincere passion for those still carrying the torch of the original California surfing subculture. Indeed, the Boone/Winslow chapter which detours down Route 101, the famous Pacific Coast Highway, is a short, poignant, and illuminating slice of American culture too often capsulized only in the 60's music of the Beach Boys.

But aside from surfing and surfer culture, "Dawn Patrol" is a serious and thoughtful crime novel, and at a deeper level, an insightful coming of age story - albeit an atypically late passage from adolescence to adulthood. As a second "dawn patrol" emerges, the story takes a despicably sinister turn, and while the climax is mostly predictable, it takes nothing away from a engaging storyline. But make no mistake: the plot is secondarly here, as Winslow's real stars are his characters and their banter, set against a vivid and authoritative SoCal backdrop. Winslow is the real deal, and if you haven't got to know him yet, this is a great place to start. If you do, I'm sure you'll be back for "California Fire and Life", "The Winter of Franky Machine", "The Death and Life of Bobby Z", and Winslow's epic masterpiece, "The Power of the Dog."

So great stuff, Mr. Winslow - keep 'em coming. And for those of you - like me - bummed with Lee Child's disappointing "Nothing to Lose", you'll find some instant redemption right here.

one of the best biographies of one of the most important men of the modern age

Gandhi is often remembered simplistically as the champion of non-violent resistance and the “father of independent India.” There is plenty of truth to this. Like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, he is remembered most for a few signature achievements. But behind these signature achievements there was a highly complex private life, and a career trajectory that was never as simple or smooth as it would seem. Judith Brown's biography of Gandhi tries to tell this more complex story. It is mainly a story of Gandhi's public life and the aspects that would later influence his view of Indian affairs: studying law in England as a young man, his early political activism in South Africa, his discovery of higher ideals upon return to India, and finally his influence on the movement for Indian independence.

Brown is depicts Gandhi as a character of both contradiction and vision, who confronted the most profound questions of the time “in the context of an active public life.” She gives particular emphasis to Gandhi’s personal crisis in the 1920s, which resulted from the failure of non-violence and his diminishing political influence as the leader of Congress. According to Brown, this crisis inspired Gandhi’s transformation from a political activist to a spiritual leader, and ultimately characterized the remainder of his life. His new vision became the transformation of Indian society from the roots upwards in order to create a unified and harmonious India free of British rule.

In contrast to the popular memory of Gandhi as the father of independent India, Brown stresses the ways in which he uneasily coexisted with the educated and westernized Indians who led the Indian National Congress. Gandhi’s sympathies lay with the poor, with the masses unable to find representation within the system the British imposed – not with Congress leaders intent on expedient political solutions. Gandhi’s early struggles in convincing Indians of the importance of non-violence, in particular, set him at odds with Congress members, who wished for a more aggressive pursuit of independence. But it also cast him as an all-India public figure capable of commanding mass support, and made him recognizable to all who were politically aware. According to Brown, this charisma became Gandhi’s appeal. His ideals reflected a unique combination of Indian traditionalism and Western idealism. He appealed to both Indians and Western sympathizers, who recognized him as a visionary spiritual leader, aloof from the fray of politics, and this is largely how he is remembered today.

The only real weakness of this biography is that it focuses perhaps overmuch on Gandhi's public life when the reader perhaps wishes for a little more on his controversial personal life (Gandhi did not have such progressive views when it came to the treatment of women, such as his wife, for example). But this is still one of the best biographies of one of the most important figures of modern history.

Wonderful for a small group Bible study!

I went through this Bible study with a small group of ladies this summer. Each week left us feeling so challenged in the areas we need to grow and helped us see what it looks like to truly "put on" Christ (His compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness & love) in our daily lives, thoughts, decisions, attitudes, and behaviors. Each week of the study is divided into 5 days, and each day's study is thorough without feeling overwhelming to complete.

This study is extremely practical, and I really saw the author's love for and knowledge of the Word of God. She has a clear and personable style of writing. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a Bible study to go through on your own or with a small group. Can't wait for the next one!

Challenging and Inspiring

I participated in this study with a group of ladies from my church. Though I had to miss a couple of the studies due to my schedule, the ones I did the study guide for were incredible. Carrie Rogers did a superb job bringing the Colossians 3:12-14 passage to life. "Therefore as God's chosen people holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves..." This resonates in my mind daily. I think of the charge that we have been given to wear compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience and I know in and of myself, it's impossible ... But, with Jesus, all things are possible. Thanks for a great study, Carrie. It was both challenging and inspiring. I think it's the perfect study for a group of women who want to deepen their faith and grown in love with Jesus.

Get ready for a closet makeover!

Carrie Rogers lays out in understandable terms what it means to put on the different attributes of Christ. Over the six week study I found some areas that I felt that I had down pat, but others that I was in desperate need of understanding in a more real way. Now that the study is finished, I find myself drifting back to the study for reminders from time to time, using phrases from the book in my every day thought life, and I have even realized that those areas that I had down pat have even benefited from the study (just goes to show He is never done working on us is He?!). "The Wardrobe of Christ" is a great study for every woman (just starting her walk or a seasoned veteran), for an individual, or for a group.
