Make sure you understand which edition is which!
By A Customer
...For some unfortunate reason, the reviews for the EXCELLENT 2001 edition by Smart and Altorfer are lumped together on the same Amazon page as the reviews for the MUCH WORSE 1992 version (by Smart alone). The two books are TOTALLY different, so make sure you know what edition the reviewer is talking about!...
I stress this because I bought the 1992 version years ago, was so
annoyed by it, and was SO much happier with the 2001 edition... A few of the improvements in the 2001 edition:
(1) The old version had lots of readings about things like the oil trade and Islamic festivals. Interesting in principle, but the problem is, they make you learn words like "crude oil", "delegation", and "fasting" before you have even a basic vocabulary (they haven't given you the words for "foot", "eyeglasses", "throw", "kitchen", etc). These are words you will want to know someday to read a newspaper etc., but they're useless at an intro stage (and hard to memorize because of their comparative abstractness).
The vocabulary choices in the new version seem so much more reasonable, and the readings start off with things like "Sinbad the sailor", which are fun and encourage learning actually useful words like "sea" and "gate".
(2) The descriptions of some of the sounds is still basically wrong in some respects, but it now provides several new useful hints (for example that the letter Haa represents the sound people make when blowing on their glasses to clean them).
(3) In the old version, the pronunciation of a word was often not clear. Sometimes the short-vowel signs were missing or fuzzy (or some random blotch ended up looking like a vowel sign). The alif-maqsuura and yaa were not consistently distinguished (contrary to the author's claim). But in the 2001 edition, romanized transcriptions are provided for all the vocabulary. (Lack of transcriptions is a complaint that many of the reviewers raise, but remember, it only applies to the old edition!!)
(4) The old version had a Arabic-to-English glossary but infuriatingly lacked an English-to-Arabic glossary. The new edition repairs this glaring defect.
(5) The 2001 edition adds an index, albeit a very short one (1 page).
The only serious complaint I can make about the 2001 edition is that it seems to be make with the same binding method as the old edition, which fell apart in no time.

Excellent beginner's book
By magellan
I've looked at about a dozen beginning Arabic books so far, and this is one of the best I've seen for the complete novice. The introductory Arabic book by Youssif Haddad and Jack Ingle has a much more detailed treatment of the grammar and structure of the language, but you need more familiarity with written Arabic to benefit from it. I enjoy learning the formal grammar more than most people so although I think Ingle's book is a better book on the actual language, since I'm a rank beginner in Arabic I bought this one instead, and will supplement it with the Ingle book.
I also thought the Hippocrene book was good, and it would be my second choice for a [beginner.] About half-way through the book it started including many full paragraphs of material for translation. I have my doubts that the beginning reader would be that advanced by that time but I don't really know. I have the Hippocrene Spanish Grammar and it is the clearest, most concise, and overall best basic grammar I have, out of the four five that I own. One other main strength to this book is that it can accompany the tapes so you can get some idea of the spoken language too.
One thing I was pleased to see was that, although I had heard that Arabic was a difficult language, it is actually much simpler than Latin or Greek or even a contemporary Slavic language like Russian, as far as the grammar is concerned. It only has three cases, the nominative, accusative, and jussive, compared to Greek's eight, Latin and Russian's six (and the vocative case in Latin is hardly ever used), and German's four. The nouns are marked for the single, dual, and plural, which is different from English, which lost the dual inflection like many Indo-European languages many centuries ago. But the books make it clear that in modern spoken Arabic the three noun declensions are pretty much universally ignored, and you don't really learn them. The only time you need to know them is if you're reading classical literature or the Koran, or in academic discourse, where it might be used.
However, one difficult thing is that Arabic has many different ways of marking the plural, and here it resembles the complex rules in English for the use of the apostrophe, which causes almost as many problems for native speakers as for foreigners.
That having been said, verb conjugations in Arabic are not difficult and are quite regular, unlike Latin and many other languages. Here Arabic resembles Japanese, which also has a very regular verbal system, and you can count the number of irregular verbs in Japanese literally on the fingers of one hand, and also Chinese, which has no conjugation for gender, number, or anything else. In fact Arabic's is so regular that Arabic dictionaries can refer to the verbs by a number system (I-X). So it appears that the main difficulty in Arabic is learning the alphabet, which is more complex than in English since the individual letters alter their form depending on whether they're at the beginning or end of a word, or in the middle. Another similarity between Arabic and Japanese, oddly enough, is that they both lack a true future tense.
Overall, a good first grammar on a language that may not be as difficult to learn as I was first thinking. However, I'm about to find out!

Excellent conversational Arabic and a Reader Too
By Douglas Hendrick
There are several negative reviews of this book which refer to an earlier edition. The 2003 edition is excellent. It does have English Transliteration to aid with pronunciation but tries to wean you from it quickly by giving you small sections of Arabic text without transliteration. These are great for learning to read and often they are also dialogues covered on the CD's. The book doesn't stop with learning to read signs and newspapers but is a full-fledged primary reader with excerpts from literature.

Make sure you get the CD set with the book. I had to return my first copy (actually fortunate, since that was the earlier edition) when I found the references to a CD that I did not have. There are many exercises which are intended for use with the CD's. There is a key to the exercises in the back.

I don't know how this book would be for a self-study if I didn't have cause to use the language daily. But, I find the conversational phrases are realistic and useful in my regular interaction with native Arabic speakers. Of course, it is a big advantage being partially immersed, but my progress was nonetheless slow and haphazard until I got this book. I had made no serious prior attempts to learn the script, I'm now reading excerpts from the Qur'an, after less than one month of work. I have used a number of learning resources and this is by far the best I have found for all-around knowledge of Arabic. I recommend a dictionary, however, as the glossary is tiny.

James Bond: My Long and Eventful Search for His Father (Kindle Single), by Len Deighton

The James Bond we know and mostly love was a creation as much of the movies as of the books by Ian Fleming. Len Deighton, author of the classic espionage novel 'The Ipcress File', knew both sides intimately. An acquaintance of Ian Fleming’s (who had praised Deighton’s debut novel in the 'Sunday Times') Deighton was also close to the man who was to become Fleming’s nemesis – Kevin McClory, a veteran of the British film industry.

The history of Bond’s development under the arc lights becomes, in Deighton’s expert hands, a saga-like story of inflated egos and poisonous vendettas, exotic locations and claustrophobic courtooms, all involving household names. As an eye witness to the protracted disputes that complicated Bond’s depiction both on screen and on the page, Deighton is in a unique position to tell what he saw. Candid, comical, always steely-eyed, this hefty slice of cinematic memoir reads with all the high-powered pace of a Len Deighton thriller.

Len Deighton is the bestselling author of more than thirty books of fiction and non-fiction. He is perhaps most famous for his spy novel 'The Ipcress File' which was made into a film starring Michael Caine.

Fascinating tidbits about the birth of the James Bond films
By J. Chambers
I'm old enough to have seen every James Bond film on its original release, and over the five decades since "Dr. No" was released in 1962, I've read a tremendous amount of Ian Fleming/James Bond lore, some undoubtedly true and some most likely a press agent's fanciful creations. However, Author Len Deighton's recollections are a treasure trove of gossipy tidbits about the principals that I've never read before.

Deighton reveals things that I wasn't aware of about his friend Ian Fleming, including the surprising fact that early on, despite the success of his James Bond novels, Fleming thought seriously about killing off Bond and ending the series. He also describes the relationship between Fleming and Kevin McClory, a man who worked with Fleming to bring the James Bond series to the movie screen, but would end up in a bitter, protracted legal battle with Fleming. McClory had worked in the movie business, but was perhaps best known for saving the large plastic model of the whale used in "Moby Dick" when it blew loose from its moorings!

Interestingly, had everything gone smoothly between Fleming and McClory, "Thunderball" would have been the first James Bond film, not "Dr. No." Exactly how this came to pass is described in this fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the personae involved in the real-life story.

By the way, the subtitle of the book refers to finding the origin of the name "James Bond."

It was great to see Len Deighton writing again after a long absence.

A case even James Bond himself would find challenging
By Joseph P. Menta, Jr.
Most James Bond fans have at least a rough idea that there was a man named Kevin McClory who established in court that he was a co-creator of the story that eventually became both the 1961 James Bond novel and 1965 film known as "Thunderball". That particular claim seems reasonable to myself and many other Bond fans.

Of course, Mr. McClory took things a step further and also claimed that he was the father of the "cinematic" James Bond we all know and love, that Ian Fleming's original creation was just the same old stodgy spy character seen countless times before in countless thrillers before Mr. McClory shaped him up into the suave adventurer that lit up movie screens. That particular claim is more problematic to myself and many other Bond fans.

However one feels, Len Deighton's essay, "James Bond: My Long and Eventful Search For His Father", is a fascinating look at that heady time when James Bond was first making the jump from reasonably popular novels to super popular films (which eventually lead to the novels becoming super popular, too). I especially enjoyed Mr. Deighton's colorful descriptions of Mr. McClory (who I now see as a real person with a passionate, real position, even if I largely don't agree with it), but I also liked learning a little more about the skills, charms, and personal foibles of Ian Fleming, Albert R. Broccoli, Harry Saltzman, and other notable personalities peppering the James Bond literary and movie landscape.

The paragraphs are a little long and the writing a little dense for what should have been a breezier, lighter reading experience, but the interesting subject matter cut through the thick verbiage and assured that this long essay- which can be completed in one to three sittings depending on your personal reading habits- was never less than a compelling glimpse into a period (beginning in the swinging sixties and extending into the early eighties) when the ownership of James Bond was a hotly-debated topic.

Raw intelligence is often the least reliable...
By John Cork
When it comes to spy novelists of the spymania boom 1960s, Len Deighton ranks in the top three. His companions are still household names: Ian Fleming and John LeCarr. Fleming died in 1964. LeCarr's star has continued to shine. Deighton has been more mercurial. His novels of the era are still wonderful reads, and there is no doubt he knows how to write. Yet, his moves into cookbooks, film producing, travel writing and military history have made him hard to pigeonhole.
Yet, like every espionage writer of his era, Deighton was touched by Bond. His remembrances here are worthy, but trying. Here's the synopsis: Deighton worked on an initial draft of the screenplay for the James Bond film, From Russia With Love. He had lunch once with Ian Fleming (an event recorded in an article at the time). He later visited the set of Thunderball while a sequence was being shot in France. In the 1970s, he worked with Kevin McClory, a neighbor in Ireland, on an attempt to remake Thunderball. He was able to meet Sean Connery at this time. On another occasion, he met McClory's lawyer in a famous lawsuit that had won Kevin the screen rights to the novel Thunderball and the various screenplays and treatments produced prior to Fleming writing the novel.
This "single" contains Deighton's memories of these events and much, much more. Here's the bottom line: if you are interested in Deighton, buy this. If you are well-versed on the history of 007's journey to the screen, buy this. If you are looking for a good, factual over-view of this story, read Raymond Benson's The James Bond Bedside Companion or Andrew Lycett's biography of Ian Fleming. Or, if you are looking for an even less time-consuming operation, one can order the Collector's Edition of the 2006 version of Casino Royale and watch two documentaries from the supplements: The Road to Casino Royale and Ian Fleming: The Secret Road to Paradise (I directed both of these). One thing that would be unwise is to read Deighton's book as an accurate history.
Below is an incomplete list of some of the historical problems with Deighton's article (or Amazon Single, as it is designated here). Please, read these with the understanding that the background Deighton gives is in many cases repeated from those who have not researched the subject adequately or in some cases seem to have come from memories that have clouded over the 50-years since Deighton first became involved in the world of 007.
Deighton proposes that Ian Fleming wasn't much of a fan of the sea. This is untrue. Fleming was an avid snorkeler in Jamaica, creating a catalog of the marine life there before he ever began writing a Bond novel. Deighton opines that Fleming was afraid of sharks and barracuda. Fleming delighted in trying to catch sharks and barracuda in Jamaica. He was no deep-sea fisherman, but he was fascinated by deadly creatures. Deighton implies that Fleming didn't know Nassau (or, more exactly, New Providence Island). Quite the contrary. Fleming had spent a goodly amount of time in the Bahamas in the 1950s. His mother had lived there, and, later, his good friend Ivar Bryce had begun spending significant time there after his marriage to an heir to the A&P fortune.
Deighton worked closely with Harry Saltzman, but he gets the story of the creation of Eon Productions (the company Harry formed with Cubby Broccoli to produce the Bond films) all jumbled up. He states that both men had the rights to a Bond novel and approached United Artists separately. This didn't happen. He appears to be mixing this story up with Wolf Mankowitz introducing the two men. At the time, Cubby Broccoli wanted to produce Bond films, but he did not have the rights. Harry controlled the screen rights to most of the Bond novels under a complex option agreement.
When talking about the production of Thunderball, Deighton makes it sound like Kevin McClory was running the show. This was not the case. McClory certainly had an impact on the production, but the film was produced under the Eon Productions banner with a core creative team members cobbled from the previous three Bond film adventures. One can understand Deighton having the impression that it was a "Kevin McClory" film based on later having spent so much time with McClory, but McClory's role in the production was limited in many ways by Broccoli and Saltzman's track record with the Bond series.
Deighton writes of the origins of the Thunderball story as though Ian Fleming and Kevin McClory just stumbled upon each other, and that McClory had coincidentally worked with Fleming's best friend, Ivar Bryce. The order of events was far different. It was Bryce who sold Fleming on McClory. Bryce, using his wife's wealth, had financed McClory's first (and only) feature film as a director. Bryce and a mutual friend named Ernest Cuneo devised a plan to produce films in the Bahamas where favorable tax rates could attract US filmmakers. To launch this, the pair approached their friend and successful novelist, Ian Fleming. Only after both Cuneo and Fleming had produced outlines of a story did Kevin McClory become involved.
Other bits of Bond history get mangled, but of note is Deighton's reporting of the court case that was settled with McClory getting the screen rights to Thunderball. The settlement terms McClory reached with Ivar Bryce are unnecessarily merged together with McClory's later agreement with Eon Productions.
Most frustrating is what is not here. Deighton does paint a portrait of McClory, but it is far from complete. He mentions the temper, the bluster and the string of unpaid bills. He makes some wonderful observations, but the portrait lacks depth and complexity. The same is true for Harry Saltzman, and, in many cases with Ian Fleming, the telling is just inaccurate.
Many Bond fans have wondered for years about Deighton's work on From Russia with Love. Deighton admits that he can't shed much light on the subject.: he never kept his draft of the script, and he never saw the film.
Enough of the criticism, here are the reasons to buy the book: Deighton was there. Even if his memories might be flawed, and his sources for his information beyond his personal memories are, with one exception, not cited, Deighton rode not just the wave of his own success, he rode the wave of Bond's success for a while. One can glean a lot from memos, script drafts, newspaper reports and the ilk. Yet even when an eyewitness is unreliable on certain facts, they look an event in the eye. If you love Deighton, this is a great chapter in his life. If you simply love Bond read this like an unedited interview transcript, unvarnished, flawed, yet filled with a few hidden gems.
The article begins by speculating on James Bond's "father." Is it Fleming? McClory? Saltzman? Ken Adam? For years, Deighton heard McClory say he created the cinematic James Bond, so this story skews in that direction every-so-slightly. I'll leave Deighton's conclusion to the readers, but there is no real doubt for those who have read the Bond novels: James Bond was created by Ian Fleming, and Ian Fleming alone. Everything that has followed is like different orchestrations of a Mozart symphony; it doesn't matter if it is played by the London Philharmonic or on a kazoo, it's still Mozart.

The Story of the Mongols: Whom We Call the Tartars, by Fr. Giovanni Carpini, Erik Hildinger

In April 1241 Mongol armies had killed some one hundred thousand European knights and men-at-arms in Poland and Hungary. They had beaten every western army they had come against. Henry II of Silesia was dead, Boleslav IV, Count of the Poles, was in hiding, and the kingdom of Hungary no longer existed; its king, Bela IV, was fleeing to the Adriatic coast pursued by a Mongol army determined to kill him. As for the country itself, the Mongols began to systematically strip and depopulate it and to strike coins. It belonged to Batu, grandson of Jinghiz Khan, the Emperor of All Men. Meanwhile, Pope Gregory IX and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II prepared to continue their personal war while Mongol scouts approached Venice. There was no army the Europeans could muster to oppose them. There seemed no reason to suppose that Western Europe would not suffer the fate of central Europe and Russia. In February 1241 the Mongol army had left its base in southern Russia and begun to cross the frozen rivers into central Europe. It consisted of about seventy thousand men, all of them cavalry. Nominally commanded by Batu, a grandson of Jinghiz Khan, he was guided by his grandfather’s famous lieutenant, Subotai, a brilliant campaigner. This general had commanded in the campaigns against the Northern Sung of China and had helped in the destruction of the Kwarizmian Empire. He had planned the campaign against Europe for a year and the results would show.

Very useful.

The publisher hasn't seen fit to provide a description of this book's contents, so I shall. Friar Carpini was sent by Pope Innocent IV on an embassy to the Mongols; this is his account of the journey. He met Batu Khan in Russia and then journeyed onward to reach the court of Guyuk Khan. He had been sent to preach Christianity to the Mongols and to offer baptism, but the other important part of his mission was to spy on them, for the Europeans were almost wholly ignorant of the Mongols when they swept acroos Europe. The chapter subheadings are perhaps the best guide to the book's contents:

1. The Tartar Country, its Location and Description and its Weather.
2. The People, their Clothes, Homes, Possessions and Marriages
3. Religion, What the Tartars Believe are Sins; Divination, Absolution and Funeral Rites
4. Their Good and Bad Customs, their Food and their Habits
5. The Founder of the Tartar Empire, its Princes and the Power of the Emperor and his Government
6. War, the Organization of the Tartar Forces, their Arms, their Tactics when Fighting and their Cruelty to Captives, How they Besiege Forts, and their Treachery toward those who Surrender to them
7. How the Tartars Make Peace; the Countries they have Conquered, the Countries which have Resisted them Successfully, and the Despotism the Tartars Exert over their Subjects
8. How to Fight the Tartars and what to Expect; the Arms and Organization of such Forces; How to Meet Tartar Cunning in Battle, and how to Supply Fortresses and Cities, and What should be Done with Captives
9. The Provinces We Passed Through and their Location; the Court of the Emperor of the Tartars and his Government, and the Witnesses who Met us there
Carpini isn't encyclopedic on any of these subjects, but he does manage a decent overview. There are only a couple of illustrations and no maps; the book would be improved if the reader could see where Carpini went, and pictures of what he's talking about. But it's very handy all the same.

A must read primary source!
By Paul Schneider
If you are in the process of reading about Mongolia and its domination of world afairs in the 13th century, then this book is a must read. Eric Hildiger's translation makes this work by the Friar flow in a smooth easy readable manner. If you are a student of History then you know the invaluable nature of primary sources. This account reflects the attitudes of Europeans at this time period toward the peoples from the steppe and yet it is surprisingly refreshing in pointing out characteristics that the Europeans might emulate. The Friar's accounts of events has become the main source for many works written about this era . I highly recommend this book as a starting off point for this subject area.

Romans in China?
By V. N. Dvornychenko
A fascinating book! Of interest not only to the expert, but also to everyone seriously interested in history. The following article provides perspective. On August 24, 2000, The Los Angeles Times carried an article headlined "Digging for Romans in China." The article presented evidence for a Roman legion having been stationed in China sometime around the beginning of this era. The Romans apparently stayed a considerable while, and very likely intermarried with the local Chinese.
What? Romans in China? But wasn't Marco Polo the first? No, he was simply the most famous. Sporadic, but unrecorded, contacts quite possibly occurred since the domestication of the horse in prehistoric times. Nor was Marco Polo the first documented contact. Preceding him by some fifty year was Friar Giovanni di Plano Carpini.
In Giovanni's time, about 1250 AD, some 800 years had passed since the devastation caused by the Huns, but these events were by no means forgotten. Reports filtering in regarding the Mongols (also called Tartars) were even more frightening. Europe badly needed information on how to deal with this new threat. Friar Giovanni was sent by the Pope to convert the Mongols to Christianity -- if possible. But the main purpose of his mission was to spy.
Friar Giovanni seems like an unlikely emissary/spy - he was sixty years old and corpulent; but he executed his mission admirably. His slender book is not only an important historical source, but also a most fascinating record of his observations. Compared to other medieval travel accounts (e.g., Polo, Mandeville) Giovanni's is very measured and matter of fact; nor does he pepper his account with numerous fantastic assertions. Yet - and this is the fascinating part - he is not entirely free of these either. He mentions a race of people who have no knees; another race whose women are of human appearance, but whose men have the shape of a dog; another who have only one arm and leg, and who must work in pairs to shoot a bow; yet another have very small mouths and live off the fumes of their cooking; and several more. He also mentions a place where the sun makes such a terrible sound (yes, sound!) that people live underground. Now, he does not actually claim to have seen these wonders. So why does he seemingly cheapen his account by including these? My own explanation is this: the medieval worldview required that such creatures exist. It appears to have been the duty of every writer of travel accounts to confirm this worldview.
But then, have we really gotten very far away? What about recurrent reports of Bigfoot? And what about the strange menagerie populating Star Wars and Star Trek?
The cover of the book is a gem! Taken around 1900, it shows a Mongol warrior in full panoply - he could have stepped right out of the army of Jenghis Khan! Worth getting for the cover alone.

Against All Enemies, by Tom Clancy

For years, ex–Navy SEAL Maxwell Moore has worked across the Middle East and behind the scenes for the Special Activities Division of the CIA, making connections, extracting valuable intelligence, and facing off against America’s enemies at every turn.

And then…news of a potentially devastating coalition: What if two of the greatest threats to the security of the United States were to form an unholy alliance? The Taliban is trying to exploit a Mexican drug cartel to which they supply opium as a means to bring the fire of jihad to the hearts of the infidels. It is up to Moore, and his team, to infiltrate and dismantle the drug cartel, even as they hunt for those who would bring the ultimate terror and destruction to the streets of America.

In a story that races from the remote, war-scarred landscapes of the Middle East to the blood-soaked chaos of the U.S.–Mexico border, Tom Clancy once again delivers a heart-stopping thriller that is frighteningly close to reality.

This is NOT a Tom Clancy book - complete fraud
By Scott Phillips
I'm a huge Tom Clancy fan and anxiously awaited his new book. However its quite clear that this is not written by Clancy, and he has just lent his name to a moneymaking exercise.

Its a thriller, and I guess its ok. But its certainly not a Tom Clancy book. Its let down in the details which Clancy always gets right. For example in the book a drug dealer lets someone shoot him with a .45 to test out a bulletproof coat, and he barely notices the impact. In the real world the kinetic impact would break his ribs. In another chapter a navy seal picks up two pistols and runs at his enemies firing them two handed, something counter to every military tactic known.

In numerous little details the author gets it wrong, where Clancy consistently gets it right. For this reason I doubt very much if Clancy even proofread the thing before adding his name to it.

In character development, plot development... its average. Not bad, its certainly readable, but pure garbage.

I wish I had 3 thumbs so I could give it 3 thumbs down

Tom Clancy did not write this poor-quality work.
By Deygan Brendan
I made it to page 2 before seeing proof that this is another non-Clancy work. Here's a part of a sentence describing the Pakistan Special Service Group: (it isn't dialogue)
"...an organization similar to the U.S. Navy SEALs, but, ahem, their operators were hardly as capable."

'Ahem'? Amongst non-dialogue description in a book not written in any 1st-person narrative? C'mon. I stopped reading at page 14, and I'm returning the purchase.

I'm sure it might be an entertaining read for some, but it's obviously a low-quality work written by an author who writes the fictional equivalent of B-movies. I worked at a Border's for five years, ending in 2006, and I'd never even heard of Peter Telep until now. The entire Los Angeles Public Library System only shows two other titles of his, written in '95, and '99, neither of which I'd ever heard of.
According to Telep's blurb on the book jacket, we're supposed to believe that this is Tom Clancy collaborating with an author who's works include "science fiction, fantasy, military action/adventure, and medical drama, and film, television, and video game tie-ins."
Seriously?

ATTN ALL CLANCY FANS: Save yourself the curiosity. This item would be a waste of money.

What a mistake
By TQL
I have been a Tom Clancy Fan since I first read Red Storm Rising. Over the years I quickly read all of the Jack Ryan novels, many of them multiple times. I can even say that I didnt mind Dead or Alive. Now to Against All Enemies. I knew that it was a collaberation when I bought it. Once I started reading the first chapter I realized that Tom Clancy had nothing to do with the writing of this book. The style is very different, there is none of the descriptive writing that is Clancy's style. The writing in fact is very poor and vague.

For fans out there that are on the fence, if you are buying the book for the plot line, then thats fine. If you are buying it with the hope that the book is in any shape or form Tom Clancy, dont waste your money. If you are at the bookstore undecided, grab a copy with a quick starbucks, and read the first chapter and make your decision then.

A Masterpiece of Sly Humour
By bibliomane01
In "A Severed Head," Iris Murdoch takes the bedroom farce to a whole new level. It's a tangled tale of love, adultery, deception, self-deception, jealousy and attempted suicide, all rendered with deadpan humour and with just enough darkness lurking behind the scenes to make it even more interesting. Many of Murdoch's novels have a central character cast as the master manipulator, but here it's never clear who is manipulating whom. The portrayal of the ponderous, rather smug protagonist is a masterpiece of sly character assassination and the immortal Honor Klein is...well, you'll have to read the book to find out. Heartily recommended.

As an Iris Murdoch "junkie", I relish all of her works, and I'm still in the process of completing the list. My personal favorites have to be A Severed Head, The Sea, The Sea, Bruno's Dream and The Green Knight, so far. A Severed Head is particularly enjoyable because its plot is fast-moving and doesn't get sidetracked with lengthy philosophical or religious theory that is inherent in so many of her books. While I do enjoy examining these topics, it's also great just to get engrossed in a good story without having to think existentially, if you know what I mean. She has incredible talent as a novelist in developing characters, describing setting, developing plot and building suspense. She uses these gifts, combined with her great sense of humor, to bring her stories to an unanticipated climax, with an even more unexpected, and often happy, ending. She treats her readers as intellectual equals, which is a nice compliment, although I know I've come up short a few times -- particularly when one of her characters spouts off a phrase in a foreign language. It's the price you pay for good art, and I wouldn't change a thing. This book is a great jumping off point for new Iris Murdoch readers, who can then graduate to her lengthier, (and more philosophical) works later. Not many people can write like Iris Murdoch, and she is missed by many. Luckily, she left her legacy in her writings that we can all enjoy for many, many years to come.

A Gem
By Kindle Customer
This book is a sexy, tantalizing gem. I felt Ms. Murdock wanted to go places she didn't quite know how to get to, but got to them anyway. Martin Lynch-Gibbon, the book's main character, is both villain and victim. The book twists and turns. There is Georgie, Martin's beautiful but woeful mistress, his wife Antonia, her lover, Palmer, Martin's brother Alexander and perhaps the book's strangest and most intriguing character, Honor Klein. I had seen the movie, "Iris," which is about Murdoch' descent into Alzheimer's disease, but I had no idea what a wonderful writer she was and is.
