Overall, Quite Useful
By LebLAteacher
As a Language Arts teacher in my fourteenth year of teaching, I've struggled with the concept of differentiation my entire career. I was not trained in differentiation in my education classes, and I have only ever had a vague notion of what differentiation is and how it works.

Differentiation: From Planning to Practice, Grades 6-12 presents, clearly and practically, what differentiation is and how to implement it at the middle and secondary levels. The process of designing a differentiated unit is logically and thoroughly described, and the sample unit that is designed illustrates the process very well. The book contains multiple suggestions for differentiating lessons, activities within lessons, and assessments of students' learning.

The one thing I would have liked to see was a few more practical examples of how to differentiate lessons for creating a product, such as an argumentative essay. I feel as though I was left having to wing it when it comes to, for example, engaging students at different levels in a lesson on appositive phrases.

Overall, though, this book will be, without a doubt, one I continue to refer to and adopt from for years to come. Study this book along with Fair Isn't Always Equal: Assessing & Grading in the Differentiated Classroom for a theoretical and practical understanding of differentiation. Starting next week, I will have a college student working with me for the rest of the spring once a week. If she isn't already familiar with differentiation, I plan on either loaning her the books or suggesting she buy them in preparation for her student teaching.

good for every teacher
By student-epk
I had to purchase this text for a class on secondary methods and classroom management and it is one of the few education texts that I will keep on my shelf in my classroom one day. It is well written and has plenty of wonderful ideas for a classroom. I am going to teach social studies for middle school students and I like how it suggested differentiating lessons for all types of students, not just gifted or remedial special needs students. I highly suggest every teacher carries this with them if they teach middle or high schools.

Hugely Important for Education
By THE-DEADLY-DOG
Another book I had to pick up for a class but ended up using extensively in discussion and forum with other people and even with my own styles in teaching. Rick Wormeli knows his stuff and it is clear throughout the entire book as he teaches teachers to better differentiate their classrooms to make for a better learning environment. Was impressed with the sheer volume of tips, tricks, and trades that Wormeli has at his disposal and gives to us.
