From a CBO in the tiny Dutch Caribbean island of Saba
By Teodor Stan
Through its various contributions this book stresses the primacy of community based agency in defining not just local but global public health responses to present challenges. It highlights how community mobilization affords a level of self-reliance that is essential to the success of international and public institutions in advancing global health agendas. The insights provided may have a great impact on any individual interested in public health, researcher, student or policy maker. Skillfully edited for clarity and structure, broadly inclusive, the volume drives the point that citizen sector buy-in defines outcomes. Citizen sector organizations are portrayed as vital drivers and implementers of good health practices.
Countless stories can be added to this book reaffirming its premise. My first-hand experience of running a CBO in the tiny Dutch Caribbean island of Saba would be among such. In the time spent on this island I've seen this resilient community`s ability to skillfully pursue its various health challenges and interests at local, regional and international levels, and noticed how sustainable changes come from within the tight-knit community, driven-in by a few determined individuals. When there is no local buy-in and dedication from community organizations, internationally or nationally funded public health agendas tend to fail despite substantial resource backing. This is still not fully grasped at times by visiting civil servants or representatives of international funding agencies arriving on a tiny Caribbean island.
