If Only You Knew, by Claire Allan

Cousins Ava Campbell (married, sensible, feeling old before her time) and Hope Scott (single, debt-ridden, in love with a man who will never love her back) have nothing in common.

But fate is about to throw them together.

When their beloved Aunt Betty - the free - spirited black sheep of the Scott family - dies in France the girls find themselves flying to the picturesque village of Saint Jeannet, tasked with sorting through her belongings and fulfilling her last wishes.

To guide them on their way, Betty has left them a series of letters detailing her own life, the heartbreak that lead her to move to France and the peace she found there with her beloved Claude.

As the women find each letter, a different layer of Betty's life, and their own lives, unfolds with hilarious, devastating and life-affirming results.

Good story, crappy formatting
By Chromeheart
*buyer beware*
This book is seriously sold short by the number of formatting flaws in the kindle edition. The entire thing is riddled with extra indents and line breaks where they don't belong, sometimes with just one word on a line, and absolutely no indication when we're switching from Hope's PoV to Ava's and vice versa. The end result is very frustrating to read.

The story itself is a charming light read; it's the kind of book you pick up on a sunny afternoon with the windows open, and a nice up of tea in your other hand. The characters are lovable in their own flawed ways, alternately making you cry and laugh out loud. I just wish the author had put a little more effort into the French countryside setting. If you don't already know what Provence looks like, don't expect to from the author's (lack of) description.

If excessive profanity and/or fake profanity puts you off, this one isn't for you. I found the smattering of "fecks" on every page irksome and unnecessary.

If only you knew how brilliant this is!
By Leah
If Only You Knew is about two cousins, Ava Campbell and Hope Scott, who are tasked - although, tasked is a bit strong a word, considering where they go to do said task - with the, er, task of sorting through their late Aunt Betty's life once she dies at her house in Saint Jeannet (in France). They're confused as to why Betty chose them; after all, Ava only met Betty once at a funeral and Hope only stayed with her for a month years ago when she went travelling with her best friend Dylan. However the two cousins duly head to France, and once there, they find letters from Betty, detailing her life in France and her life in Ireland before she went to France, and as the girls delve more into Betty's life they learn of secrets they weren't already aware of and they figure out that although Betty only knew them barely, she was indeed a lot more perceptive than anyone gave her credit for.

I very much enjoyed reading If Only You Knew, the story is an excellent one, although there is a niggling feeling that I've read a similar book that was also really good (so good, I appear to have forgotten what it was...). I wasn't sure what to expect, as you know, but it's a really perceptive read. I felt Claire Allan tapped in to the story brilliantly, managing to make Betty such an important part of the book despite her death, I felt she tapped into Ava and Hope in such a way that they'll stay with me for a while yet and I just found the whole book to be an enchanting read. I found myself getting lost in the story, getting lost in Betty's letters which really, really added to the book. It's truly one of the most impressive books I've read this year and I was just so impressed with how layered it was.

If Only You Knew really impressed me. I just loved it all and it was just the whole package, a nice story, a good backstory, characters I cared about. The only thing I felt was lacking was a real set-to between Hope and her best friend (and secret love) Dylan. I kept waiting for them to duke it out properly, for Hope to just be honest and it never came, which was a shame. It seemed as if it needed to happen, if I'm honest, and I was disappointed it never did. Apart from that, though, I thoroughly enjoyed my reading of the book. Claire Allan is supremely talented (even if she sometimes uses Irish words I don't understand - boking, for example, which if my powers of deduction are correct it means puking. I also don't understand the use of the word "baggage" as in "You're such baggage", because to me, that makes no sense!) and I just loved the whole book. I will indeed be reading the other Allan novel I have, and I can safely presume that this is indeed her breakout book and what a book it is.

Very sweet read. Great way to escape for a few hours.
By bleachhouselibrary
Two cousins, Ava and Hope, both in their thirties, both leading very different lives.
Ava is a married mother of one and juggles family life with her job as a teacher. Always striving for perfection, she is the queen of the to-do-list and organises everything with extreme care.
Hope, on the other hand, is a freelance journalist, living with her best friend Dylan, who she is secretly in love with. Scatty and not at all in control of her life, she is coasting along day to day.
When their Aunt dies and leaves them a letter in her will, it leads them both to France, where they will discover more about themselves, as well their Aunt Betty.

I have read this author's work before and have always enjoyed her novels, so it was a no-brainer to choose this as part of #IrishFictionFortnight. From Derry, in Northern Ireland, Claire has a lovely way with words and yet pulls no punches with her language. The story of these two cousins was believable, with a great cast of supporting characters. I especially loved Fiona, the fellow mother of one, who has nothing good to say about being a mum and who makes you wonder why some people have children at all. Through a series of letters, the author introduces us the wonderful world of Betty. Growing up in Derry, in the midst of The Troubles, she is swept of her feet and moves to France. Her new life is a far cry from the one she left behind, but she has left a part of her in the walled town. The cousins both have their issues, with Ava struggling to be themother she wants to be and Hope feeling let down by her flatmate and the love of her life. However, I found Hope's repetitive rants and thoughts about Dylan became a little tiresome.

The house in France sounds idyllic and, more than once, I had that fleeting dream of packing up my family and moving there. Then I remembered, this is the real world, not a novel, and it's never going to happen! Nonetheless, the descriptions of Betty's home, and the surrounding areas, were divine. I felt like I was with the girls as they crept into the attic to find out more about their Aunt.

This is women's fiction so, of course, there is a love interest. Predictable as it was, it lightened the mood of the book and added the romantic element to the sun drenched chapters. For those who have not read Claire's work, be ready for some Northern Ireland turn of phrase, like 'wee' instead of 'small', which always bring a smile to my face as I read them. Try saying them out loud for added entertainment, my kids loved when I tried my best Derry accent (which is not good). I have already rooted out my next Claire Allan book, as she is a perfect blanket to wrap yourself in, on these cold January evenings...

Best of the AvP trilogy
By Angelus Draven
I absolutely LOVE this book! I think they did a real good job it. What i especially liked about this one is that the author would not only give you insight on what the humans were thinking, the predators also. This book answered alot of my questions that I had about the Yautja(predators) and also other interesting facts. I agree with some reviewers that the Aliens were not in this book much...thats actually how it is in all 3 books. I've read the other books Predators books as well -- Predator: Cold War, Big Game, and Concrete Jungle. I've also read pretty much all the comic books that Dark Horse has published. Dont get me wrong, i enjoyed these books(concrete jungle & cold war), but they never gave me what I wanted..which was more about the Predator. I was totally relieved and excited that the authors went into it! And for a bonus, i've also read AvP: Hunters Planet and AvP: War. Basically for those books, I only found the end of them interesting. This was because pretty much all the action was saved for the end. What I didn't I found troublesome about this Trilogy was that there was a HUGE plot hole in the story. If you read all 3, you'll know what I mean.
Bottom line -- if you'd like to know more about the Predator, this is the probably the best source!

Husband read it in 2 hours!
By Erica Vandegrift
I bought this book for my husband who is an avid reader and sci-fi fan (and of course an Arnold Schwarzeneggar fan). I only bought this one to start in case he didnt like it. But he sat down and read it in about 2 hours give or take 30 minutes. So I will be buying him the rest of the series.

an entertaining pulp
By themysticanimal
i bought this book thinking that it was a graphic novel, and i felt disappointed after realising that it's not. so i decided afterwards to finish reading it fast.but to my surprise ,i ended up liking it.
i wanted to give it a five star, but the fact that it's an adaptatoin from a graphic story by randy stradley and chris warner, and that it's written by two people, a father and daughter team, steve perry and stephani perry, changed my mind.
the story.human colonization of outer space,a planet called ryushi,a wrong choice, for we discover later that the predators use it as a training ground.the human with their cattle and ranches, the predators with their aliens fox hunting.the ranchers don't like their female japanese boss.a young predator warrior doesn't like his captin.discoveries of both sides , the aliens break loose and the plot thickens.
what i really liked about the book is it's depiction of the predators army life ,their language and the human encounter ,especially on pages 164 and 165.this form of greeting, placing the right hand on the left sholder of a friend and shaking it slightly,is used by sudanese men in sudan africa.i don't know if the writers know that or not.
an enjoyable pulp.

Looking forward to the last volume
By Kindle Customer
And the reason why? Because this one left me feeling frustrated and angry. Angry about the way it ended, not about the story as a whole. I should have waited until I had them all, before reading the final volumes because waiting is going to be very frustrating.

One of the best stories I've read, and in 72 years of living, I've read a lot of stories.
Always on edge, always a new surprise around the bend.

~~The Chase Continues~~
By USN Chief, Ret..VT Town
The Castle in which John, Michael, Rachel and the others are holed up is running out of food. This means a desperate situation is building and shortly some will have to be found in the outlying areas. Ed, a pot smoking early aged man, has quite the role with his run through town and later at the castle!

In a nearby town, Annie Holloway, has ruled with an iron fist for over 4 decades. She is in complete control until the Infected approach the building. Someone must be sent for food but who will the victim be? Annie is one mean person, to put it gently. The description of her personality borders on psychotic mixed with pure hatred. As the reader will learn, she spares nothing when dealing with the torture of her victims.

The title of this book fits perfectly. It seems as though a trauma is occurring in every chapter and the book is a real page turner, for sure. The drama never ends right up until the last page.

The ending caught me by complete surprise which I always enjoy in a book. And, am hoping there is another one in the planning stage.

Highly recommended.

The Best Man, by Gore Vidal, Gore Vidal

The Best Man crackles with the smart lines and situations inherent to the work of Gore Vidal. The political intrigues rampant in Vidals 1960 setting are strangly similar to the political intrigues of the present day. This darkly satirical drama finds two presidential contenders seeking the endorsement of an aging ex-president and explores how personal agendas can change the course of a nations destiny.

A L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring: Terrence Currier, Johnny Holliday, Naomi Jacobson, Timmy Ray James, Michael Kramer, Marsha Mason, Paul Morella, Kevin Murray, Judy Simmons, Gary Sloan and Senator Fred Thompson.

Review
Director Nick Alcott and his cast create an adrenaline-charged pace in Gore Vidal's 1960 political drama (revived in 2000) about the backstage maneuvering of a presidential convention. On- and off-the-record conversations unfold quickly and meaningfully as candidate Bill Russell (Fred Thompson) seeks to win his party's nomination without surrendering his self-respect. The play, even after 44 years, is a smart little gem, and the performance effectively captures its various moods, moving smoothly between satire and drama and always skewering the national habit of instinctive dissembling. The only intermittent weakness is Fred Thompson, who sounds a bit lifeless in some important scenes, but the ensemble acting is consistently fine. --AudioFile Magazine

Western historical romance
By S. Rayball
Do you know that line in books where the main male character is super impressed by the female character who stoically succeeds at the monumental task they have no training or experience and some how does it incredibly well and better than everyone else... "Any other woman would be crying and complaining about now..." Well this is the exact opposite of those kind of stories! These women just suffer through everything hating and crying through almost the entire story. I couldn't read it again but by the time you get to the end you really feel like you been through everything with them.

The Rise and Decline of the State, by Martin van Creveld

The state, which since the middle of the seventeenth century has been the most important of all modern institutions, is in decline. From Western Europe to Africa, many existing states are either combining into larger communities or falling apart. Many of their functions are likely to be taken over by a variety of organizations that, whatever their precise nature, are not states. In this unique volume Martin van Creveld traces the story of the state from its beginnings to its end. Starting with the simplest political organizations that ever existed, he guides the reader through the origins of the state, its development, its apotheosis during the two World Wars, and its spread from its original home in Western Europe to cover the globe. In doing so, he provides a fascinating history of government from its origins to the present day. This original book will of interest to historians, political scientists and sociologists.

Review
"...this study offers two major scholarly contributions. First, the state is regarded as "merely one of the forms" the organization of government has assumed; therefore it is not eternal. Second, Van Creveld points out that development and spread of new institutions--"abstract organizations" in the author's words--since a quarter of century ago have started to take over some of the state functions..." X. Hu, Social and Behavioral Sciences

"Martin Van Creveld provides an insightful history of the state and the most lucid analysis to date of the contemporary challenges it faces...This is an important book." Peter Schwartz, Whole Earth

"This is a book which many more should read than will, such as anyone teaching 'Western Civilization' or 'Modern Europe', anyone interested in intellectual history, or anyone simply interested in the political condition of the modern world." Richard A. Oehling, H-Net Reviews

"'The Rise and Decline of the State'--a tight display of erudition counterpointed by occasional heavy-handed attempts at humor--makes the case." Washington Times

"Van Creveld's latest study is an important and wide-ranging scholarly work, in addition to being both beautifully written and a thoroughly engaging reading. It is crucial reading not only for students of military and political history, but also for those of Western utopian literature, since it clearly highlights throughout the links between fact and fiction. Besides its value to academics, this expansive and interesting review of the evolution of the nation-state worthwhile and enjoyable reading for anyone with an interest in political science and history." UTOPIAN STUDIES

"This study is not only brilliant history; it is insightful and brimming with scores of fascinating and plausible hypotheses..." The Journal of Interdisciplinary History

Historical analysis as it should be written (well, almost)
By Arkadiy Dubovoy
I will start my review with what I consider two weaknesses of this book.

First, one of the previous reviewers commented on questionable accuracy of the historical facts presented in the book. I found one minor factual error and one mistake with the events I personally witnessed (p. 375). The factual error is the statement that Andropov started campaign to tighten discipline and, as part of it, he launched a campaign against drunkenness. In reality, Andropov indeed started wide-spread disciplinary measures, but the "credit" for the disastrous anti-drunkenness campaign of 1985 goes to Gorbachev.
The mistake is van Creveld's statement that after Afghanistan "adventure ended in defeat, in 1988, the Soviet leadership was left without an armed force which could have imposed unity on the country." This is nonsense. It is equivalent of saying that as a result of defeat in Vietnam, the US Army was destroyed. In fact, Soviet Army was used successfully afterwards exactly for the purpose of maintaining internal stability: in January of 1990 26,000 Soviet troops stormed overnight Baku (the capital of Azerbaijan) effectively "restoring the order" and killing 130 and injuring 700 people in the process. Also, in 1991-1992 the 14th Army under the command of General Lebed had effectively stopped the civil war between Moldova and Transdnistria and restored peace in the region. Only several years later, by murdering General Rokhlin and starting the First Chechen War, KGB started in earnest the destruction of Soviet Army as a fighting machine and political force (General Lebed was killed later).

The second weakness of this book is its writing style. Unfortunately, Professor van Creveld has an intractable predilection for large, convoluted, and unwieldy sentences, especially in the first two thirds of the book. Combined with the book's poor editing, it leads sometimes to outright blunders. Here is an example of a sentence taken from page 350 of the paper-back edition:
"The idea that complete sovereignty, including the unrestricted right to wage war, was too dangerous to entertain in the age of modern technology suffered another blow as a result of World War I and the 10 million casualties (in dead alone) that it wrought."
Not only must you parse this phrase in order to understand it (and you, by necessity, will become good at parsing by page 350 of this book), but this sentence, judging by the context, means exactly opposite: the idea that sovereignty understood as a right to wage war has become too dangerous did not suffer any blows, but was, in fact, confirmed by the horrors of World War I.
My purpose in pointing this out is to allay the anxiety of the future readers of this book. If you cannot understand some passages, this is not because you are stupid, but because of the regrettable way this book was written and edited.

Why would you bother to read a book which is difficult to read and may not be very accurate? There are a few reasons:
First, Professor van Creveld excels in making sense out of the heap of seemingly unrelated historical events. The breadth and depth of the scope of this book is so immense, that it must have inconsistencies by definition (because, for example, historians frequently disagree on the meaning and significance of historical events). This book is not meant to be a source of exact historical information, and you should not use it as such.
The historical analysis offered in this book is essentially Hegelian, i.e. the author presents different forms of political organization at the dawn of human civilization and then shows in minute detail how those organizations changed in time to become the modern state. The author combines an enormous amount of information - facts, dates, historical anecdotes - in order to prove that the modern state is not "the end of history," but only another stage of political development of human society. The author further shows that the modern state had outlived its usefulness and is due to be replaced by a different form of socio-political organization.

The second reason to read this book is the pleasure of following Professor van Creveld's process of historical thinking. Very few historians can match his erudition and intellect, and you can learn a lot simply by reading his thoughts on the subject.

Except for a very vague outline in the last five pages, there is no prediction of the future in this book - Professor van Creveld is too wise for that. Don't look for any practical advice either. If you need to know what kind of shelter to build, what gun to buy, and whether you must invest in ammunition, or gold, or both - look somewhere else. This book is a purely academic exercise, albeit of the highest order.

The Rise and Decline of the State was first published in 1999. Despite all the events of the last 6-7 years (9-11, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.) this book holds its own remarkably well. I only want to comment that the extent of the UN "oil-for-food" corruption scandal was not known in the late 1990's, otherwise Professor van Creveld would probably expand on his opinion about the role of the UN (p. 385). It may well turn out that a hundred years from now historians will admire the honesty, dedication, and accountability of our state bureaucrats compared to their ruthless and corrupt non-government bureaucracies.

Overall, I think that The Rise and Decline of the State is well worth the time and effort necessary to study it. You will look at the current political and social events from a completely different perspective after reading this book. Anyone interested in history and politics must be aware of and pay attention to the discussion presented in this book.

Brilliant
By Steve Jackson
Every once in a while you come across a book that goes beyond being interesting or thought-provoking, but is a veritable five lane intellectual super-highway. Martin van Creveld's The Rise and Decline of the State is such a book.
Prof. van Creveld's work revolves around this point: prior to the seventeenth century (with some exceptions) rule was seen as personal. The monarch personally ruled over a given region and the people owed him their loyalty. The state was not the abstract entity that it was to become. The change from personal to abstract rule brought with it profound consequences in virtually all aspects of life.
Along the path from personal to abstract rule, many thinkers and rulers played a role, but Hobbes was decisive. [p. 179.] Also important were Locke, Montesquieu and Rousseau.
Of course, personal rule didn't guarantee that you would live in a libertarian paradise. Nonetheless, personal rule carried with it certain obligations: the sovereign (generally as a servant of God) was under the law and his powers were limited. The modern, bureaucratic state has almost unlimited powers. Even worse, the total state often leads to total war. In earlier times, wars between "states" were really quarrels between ruling houses and the common man could escape involvement. Not so with the modern state: you are a citizen of the state and owe it your exclusive allegiance. [p. 185.]
There is a lot more a reviewer could comment on in this book. Prof. van Creveld has all sorts of interesting things to say about the rise of the state and changes in crime, education, war, and the economy.
I do have one quarrel with the book. On page 178, Prof. van Creveld says that Christianity teaches that God "is believed to possess no fewer than three different bodies." Since Prof. van Creveld is not (so far as I can tell) a Mormon, I'm at a loss to see how he came up with that idea.

A brilliant book
By JM Showalter
In this book, Van Crevald gives a synopsis of the rise in importance of the state and then a synopsis of forces that could (or will) lead to its decline. As a work of political history, I suggest that this work is invaluable-- both to students who lean toward institutionalism and neorealism.... For a book of political science, this book is relatively a fun read: I don't want to say it is impossible to put down, but damned close!
I would suggest that this book is a MUST read for anyone who has been conditioned to think politically along the line leading from Morganthou to Waltz because it MIGHT hint at things that are to come, especially (and initially) for non first or second tier states.
